Words Alive connects children, teens, and families to the power of reading. We serve students of all ages and their families throughout San Diego County. During the 2022-2023 year, we served 5,000 children, teens, and families facing extraordinary life circumstances through family workshops, read alouds in classrooms, and teen book clubs. Words Alive is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Grants & Institutional Giving Manager is responsible for supporting and growing Words Alive's institutional fundraising efforts through strategic grant writing, prospect research, pipeline development, and grant management. Working closely with the Director of Development and Executive Director, this position leads the development of compelling grant proposals, reports, and supporting materials for foundation, corporate, and government funding opportunities. The Grants & Institutional Giving Manager maintains a strong institutional funding pipeline by identifying new funding opportunities, tracking deadlines and deliverables, managing grant calendars, and ensuring high-quality stewardship and reporting for institutional partners. In addition to institutional fundraising responsibilities, this role supports organizational fundraising campaigns, donor engagement activities, and special events that contribute to the overall success of Words Alive's development program. This position is ideal for a highly organized, detail-oriented professional who enjoys writing, research, project management, and building the systems necessary to support sustainable fundraising growth.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Institutional Giving & Grants Management (60%) Lead the development, writing, and submission of grant proposals, letters of inquiry, sponsorship requests, and reports for foundation, corporate, and government funding opportunities. Research and identify prospective foundation, corporate, and public funding opportunities aligned with organizational priorities and strategic goals. Maintain and manage a robust institutional funding pipeline, including prospect tracking, application schedules, reporting requirements, and stewardship activities. Monitor funding trends and emerging opportunities within literacy, education, youth development, and nonprofit sectors. Develop prospect profiles and briefing materials to support relationship-building efforts. Collaborate with program and leadership staff to gather information and develop compelling funding proposals and reports. Ensure timely completion of grant reports, funding deliverables, and compliance requirements. Track grant outcomes, deadlines, and institutional funding performance metrics. Support cultivation and stewardship efforts for institutional funders in partnership with the Director of Development and Executive Director. Campaigns, Events & Fundraising Support (20%) Support organization-wide fundraising campaigns and donor engagement initiatives, as needed, through content development, storytelling, and project coordination. Assist with sponsorship outreach, fulfillment, and stewardship activities related to fundraising events. Participate in fundraising and community events to support organizational engagement and stewardship goals. Development Operations & Administration (15%) Maintain accurate grant records, institutional funder data, and proposal documentation within donor and grants management systems. Support development reporting, budgeting, and forecasting activities related to institutional revenue. Assist with maintaining fundraising calendars, workflows, and departmental project management systems. Other Duties as Assigned (5%)
QUALIFICATIONS
Required 3+ years grant writing or institutional fundraising experience. Bachelor's Degree in related field. Strong writing and editing skills. Research and project management skills. Experience managing multiple deadlines. Familiarity with foundation, corporate, or government grants. Preferred Qualifications Experience working in a small or mid-sized nonprofit organization with broad fundraising exposure. Familiarity with donor database systems; DonorView experience strongly preferred. Experience in literacy, education, youth development, or mission-driven organizations preferred.
THIS POSITION REQUIRES
Ability to work on a computer and phone for at least 50% of the day. Typing and other repetitive activities for extended periods of time Ability to attend meetings, activities, and events throughout Words Alive's service area. Overnight travel is a rare possibility. Use of personal cell phone, as necessary, during remote and site-based work. Available early mornings, evenings, and weekends to engage with key stakeholders as required. Staff are often asked to help lift loads of 30+ lbs. regularly. Reasonable accommodations can be made as necessary. Access to a reliable vehicle or public transportation. Ability to pass a federal background check.
