Solid Waste Temporary Laborer

The City of Valdez Solid Waste Department is hiring for a summer laborer. Under general supervision of the Solid Waste Manager, operates some equipment to collect, transport and dispose of refuse and trash, operates within the baler facility and at landfill as needed. Must be 18 years of age possess and maintain a valid Alaska driver's license.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

: Operates equipment and other machinery in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures. Assists Solid waste Technicians with baler operation. Assists Solid waste Technicians with proper disposal of hazardous waste and recyclable materials. Maintains required forms, maintenance record and daily trip reports. Assists with inspection, cleaning, maintenance of vehicles. Complies with all safety rules and regulations. Performs other related duties as assigned. Position is open until filled, review of applications begins April 17, 2026.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS

Knowledge of:

Department operations, policies and procedures. Traffic laws, ordinances and regulations involved in heavy equipment operation.

Skill in:

The safe operation of equipment and vehicles. Following work instructions.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

: Work is performed in internal and external environments with exposure to inclement weather and varying temperatures. May be exposed to hazardous chemicals, materials and airborne and blood borne pathogens, and frequent walking, bending and lifting. Employee may be called out to work off-shift in emergency situations.
