Job Description

The City of Norcross is looking for a Full-time Equipment Operator. The purpose of this position is the operation of heavy-duty equipment needed to make needed repairs. The incumbent in this position will operate equipment utilized in the repair of water and sewer lines. The incumbent will also be responsible for stabilizing banks, creeks & ditches, and correcting erosion.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Operates a backhoe, front-end loader, trencher, air compressor and other tools and equipment. Maintains and repairs sidewalks and streets by performing such tasks as patching holes with asphalt. Maintains vehicles and equipment by performing such tasks as checking antifreeze, oil, fuel and other fluid levels and conditions. Maintenance of grounds on municipal properties by performing such tasks as cutting grass, trimming trees, and clearing rights-of-way. Install and replace street signage. Strip crosswalk and parking lots. Assist with projects and other duties as assigned. Stabilizing banks, creeks & ditches. Corrects erosion. Assists other departmental crews as needed. Work Experience Requirements:
High School diploma or GED and one to three years of experience. Equivalent combination of education and experience. Must comply with the U.S. Department of Transportation's Part 382 - Controlled Substances and Alcohol Use and Testing Policy. Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. Ability to pass random drug and alcohol tests.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
Any other duties as assigned by the Public Works Superintendent.
Scope and Impact:
Position has recurring work situations involving high degrees of discretion. The need for accuracy and effective utilization of accepted programs and routines is high. Errors in judgment will waste resources and adversely affect performance. Incumbent operates independently but work is verified. Content of work priorities are determined by supervision. Successful performance helps ensure safe and attractive streets and a positive public image for the city.
Communications/Customer Contact:
Contact is typically with co-workers, other city employees, and the general public. The nature of the interaction is generally to provide and/or exchange information and provide services.
Competencies:
Knowledge of equipment operation. Skill in operating a dump truck, front-end loader, backhoe, air tools, trenchers, weed eaters, and other heavy equipment. Skill in the use of standard tools (e.g., shovels, picks, wrenches, etc.). Skill in repairing streets. Skill in operating a dump truck and lawn mower. Skill in following oral directions.
