Job Description

Job Summary:
The Seasonal Parks Laborer works directly under the direction of the Grounds and Buildings Foremen. Duties will include but not be limited to the administering and performing a wide range of park maintenance duties as related to the Belvidere Park District Parks Department.
General Hours:
Schedule, classification, & hours for this position are as follows and may change if necessary. Monday - Friday 7:00am - 3:30pm Working weekends maybe required However, the parks are open 7 days a week, 365 days a year and schedules may vary to cover nights, weekends, emergencies, special events and holidays.
Essential Functions:
  • Assist with the daily grounds, horticulture, and building maintenance operations for the district.
  • Collaborate with other maintenance staff to achieve departmental goals.
  • Assures that tools and equipment are properly maintained and kept in proper working order.
  • Attend pertinent departmental/park district meetings and in-house training sessions.
  • Participate as a team member to assist and improve the overall services to the community.
  • Maintain a neat and orderly work environment.
  • Adhere to all organizational policies and procedures as designated by the district.
  • Performs other work-related duties and functions as assigned.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills Required:
  • Basic knowledge of materials and supplies used in grounds, horticulture and facility maintenance and repairs.
  • Basic knowledge of principles relating to grounds as it relates to turf, athletics, and equipment and vehicle maintenance.
  • Basic knowledge of principles relating to horticulture as it relates to natural area, trees, and landscaping maintenance.
  • Basic knowledge of principles relating to facilities as it relates to playground, concrete, and general building maintenance.
  • Ability to operate several different types of equipment and tools used in performing maintenance duties.
  • Ability to follow standard safety practices and procedures common to the maintenance field.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and productively to complete work assignments and projects in a timely manner.
  • Ability to apply good judgment and practical knowledge to resolve unusual or irregular problems in the area of work assigned.
  • Strong oral and written communication.
  • Ability to work unsupervised.
  • Ability to work in several environmental extremes; those typical of the Midwest region.
Physical Demands/Work Environment:

  • General work area is outdoors, in several environmental extremes, typical with working in the Midwest climate.
  • Sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling and repetitive motion.
  • Have a normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare and communicate appropriately in person and in writing.
  • Specific vision requirements: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to focus.
  • Frequently lift/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift/or move, with assistance more than 80 pounds. Must be able to perform physical duties with little or no assistance.
  • Have full range of body motion, including handling and lifting items and packages.
  • Exposure to chemicals such as cleaning solutions, solvents, petroleum products, etc.
