Electronic (Using your CalCareer Account) Job Description and Duties Under direction of the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisor), the incumbent will assist in habitat development and management activities on seasonal wetlands and associated upland habitats and infrastructure maintenance at the Gray Lodge Wildlife Area. Assist with the implementation of habitat development projects on 9,200 acres of seasonally managed wetlands in the northern Sacramento Valley. Maintain and operate heavy equipment in order to create and maintain wetland and upland habitat, perform routine maintenance of facilities and semi-skilled tasks within the wildlife area in order to implement the Area's goals and objectives. Duties will include the operation wheeled tractor, dozer, backhoe, grader and other equipment and vehicles. Use this equipment in connection with attachments such as discs, mowers, seeders, and scrapers in order to create and maintain wetland and upland habitat as well as the associated levees and access roads. Operate spray equipment and use herbicides to control invasive plants. Performs a variety of manual labor. Must possess (or obtain within 1 year) and maintain Class A Commercial license valid for the operation of any combinations of vehicles necessary to transport equipment and implements on and between wildlife areas. To complete this, incumbent will be required to clean and grease equipment and attachments daily. Conduct preventive routine and periodic maintenance such as oil changes, minor and emergency repairs on all vehicles, tractors, and heavy/minor equipment. Maintain vehicle logs and equipment service records for all equipment and vehicles. Gray Lodge is has a large public use program. During open seasons, incumbent will operate hunter check stations by issuing permits, effectively communicating with the public by answering their questions, identifying species and number harvested and recording/tracking harvest data. This position may be filled in the following counties: Butte County & Sutter County. This position is a 12-month Limited Term (LT) and may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent. During this 12-month Limited Term assignment, you will receive full health, dental, and vision benefits! You will also earn State Service and accrue monthly leave credits. You will find additional information about the job in the . Working Conditions This position is expected to primarily work outdoors in adverse weather conditions and unstable terrain. Position is required to atypical hours, some nights, weekends and/or holidays for hunter check station operation. This position requires possession of a valid commercial Class A driver's license or possession of a valid class C driver's license with the ability to obtain a commercial class A driver's license within one year of appointment. Respond to public inquiries and emergency situations. Must be able to use a computer with keyboard and mouse to complete various office tasks, including administrative paperwork related to purchasing, equipment and vehicle logs, operational planning and tracking of field projects. Occasional travel (2-5 days per year) is required within the state of California via private or public transportation (i.e., automobile, airplane, etc.) for trainings, meetings or conferences. Travel may include overnight stay. Incumbent will be required to wear a uniform consistent with Department Policies. State-owned housing may be available, but residency is not a requirement of the position. Must have the ability to plan, organize, and direct the work of others; analyze situations accurately and take effective action. Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills; be able to work well in a team environment; and be able to communicate effectively with colleagues, customers, clients, vendors, and outside agencies. Ability to act independently, with open-mindedness, flexibility, and tact.
