Stable Hand FSLA:
Non-Exempt Reports to: Stable Manager Position Overview The Stable Hand is essential for the daily care and management of horses, maintaining clean facilities, and assisting backstage during performances. The role operates within a dynamic show environment featuring an enclosed arena with chemical fog and pyrotechnics. Key Responsibilities Saddle, brush, and wash horses to maintain their health and show appearance. Feed and water horses according to established schedules and dietary requirements. Pick hooves and monitor horse condition, reporting concerns to management. Assist with costuming horses prior to performances. Maintain cleanliness of the barn and arena by raking aisles, sweeping mats of shavings, hay, dust, and dirt in both dirt arena and outside barn areas. Clean stalls and ensure proper disposal of waste by emptying wheelbarrows into dumpsters. Mix and feed grain, throw hay, and replenish bedding materials as needed. Lift and carry items up to 50 lbs, including hay bales and equipment. Safely transport horses between the show arena and barn, navigating uneven terrain. Provide backstage assistance by moving horses in and out of stalls and preparing them for performances. Secure and catch horses backstage, ensuring their safety during show transitions. Physical Requirements Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs regularly. Comfortable walking and working on uneven terrain, both indoors and outdoors. Capable of extended periods of standing, walking, and manual labor. Work Environment Shows are held in an enclosed arena where chemical fog and pyrotechnic effects are present. The position involves working in dusty, dirty, and variable temperature conditions. Exposure to live animals, loud noises, and backstage activity is frequent. Qualifications Previous experience with horse care or barn maintenance preferred. Ability to follow instructions precisely and work collaboratively with show staff. Strong attention to safety and detail, particularly in high-energy show environments. Reliable, punctual, and able to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
