Job Description

Job Summary Performs various tasks as assigned by the Public Works Foreman or Crew Leader in the maintenance of Borough streets, grounds and facilities. Duties Performs minor building repairs where structural integrity is not at issue. Performs flagger and work zone traffic control duties as directed. Loads truck with appropriate equipment for daily tasks. Replaces damaged sign posts, worn or weathered signs and the like. Maintains regular and reliable attendance. Maintains pool facility including the maintenance of water chemical balance. Ability to work weekends when scheduled, be on call periodically, and respond to emergencies on short notice. Required to be on call for snow/ice control operations. Assists staff from other Borough departments and/or divisions as needed. Attends trainings, workshops and classes related to job duties. Behaves in a profession and courteous manner when interacting with the public and other employees. Performs lawn and grounds maintenance activities to include mowing (riding and push mowers), raking, watering, weeding, tree trimming and removal, etc. Performs maintenance and repair of sewage pumping stations. Opens blocked drains, cleans bathrooms, sweep floors, etc. Operates power driven machinery such as chain saws, pruning equipment, gasoline powered hedge trimmers or other similarly sized equipment. Performs manual labor and maintenance work related to the upkeep of Borough streets, grounds and facilities. Operates dump trucks, tractors, lawn mowers, backhoes, snow removal equipment and other related equipment. Empties trash cans and cleans up litter/debris at Borough facilities and along roadways; including removal of dead animals / wildlife. Performs snow and ice control operations on public roads. Drives snow plow and applies snow/ice control materials. Clears snow from sidewalks, recreation paths and parking areas at Borough facilities as directed. Performs various labor-intensive tasks; includes lifting of heavy materials, shoveling and sweeping. Cleans and maintains shop, trucks, tools and equipment used; performs routine maintenance, service and repair on equipment used. Preforms minor maintenance on equipment such as changing oil, replacing minor worn parts, removing seasonal equipment from vehicles, changing blades, etc. Locates and marks areas for safe digging and / or for PA One Call purposes. Adheres to all safety rules and regulations. Operates vehicles and equipment in a safe and responsible manner. Repairs roadways and road beds; grades roads, repairs ditches and shoulders, dumps and spreads gravel; applies hot top and patches to surfaces and the like. Performs drainage maintenance activities. Installs, maintains and repairs catch basins and associated piping. Installs and maintains drainage culverts. Paints road lines, handicap spaces, crosswalks, stop lines, parking space lines and the like. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of building repair and preventive maintenance techniques, including basic painting, carpentry, plumbing, electrical and mechanical skills. Knowledge of the proper and safe use of power and hand tools, ladders, extension cords, and other related equipment. Strong skills in the operation and manipulation of snow plows, trucks and other equipment under all weather conditions. Knowledge and skill necessary to safely perform snow removal, salting, and related operations under various severe weather conditions. Knowledge of mechanical operation and maintenance of diesel and gas trucks. Knowledge and skill of practical, general lawn care practices. Knowledge and skill in pool maintenance. Ability to work alone or with others and to work with minimum supervision. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public. Good physical condition is required to perform physical labor.
LICENSING AND CERTIFICATION CDL
- Class A (or must obtain CDL - Class A within 6 months of being hired). Flagger Certification (or must obtain flagger certification as required). Pesticide Applicators Core License and Category 24 (or must obtain within 12 months of being hired) Sewage pump station licenses as required. The Borough reserves the right to add required licensing throughout the duration of employment.
