Job Title:
Loadout Technician Job Description The Loadout Technician safely and efficiently manages the loading and unloading of trucks, railcars, and containers while maintaining accurate shipping and receiving documentation and supporting quality, safety, and operational excellence. This role combines hands-on material handling, basic lab analysis, and data entry with regular customer and carrier communication to ensure that all products are prepared, packaged, and shipped in accordance with company standards and applicable regulations. Responsibilities Load and unload trucks, railcars, totes, and containers in accordance with company standards and applicable regulations. Climb and work at elevation on semi-tractor trailers and railcars, including in inclement weather and in a wide range of ambient temperatures from very cold to very hot. Properly document all shipping and receiving activities, maintaining accurate logs, files, and records for every shipment. Conduct initial lab analysis on inbound product to confirm it meets established quality standards before acceptance. Verify freight bills for accuracy and completeness. Prepare and review packing lists, bills of lading, and other shipping documentation to ensure correct and compliant shipments. Assist in maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the tank farm and trucking bay. Receive parts and supplies for the plant and office and properly file them for inventory records. Enter customer data into the data management system accurately and in a timely manner. Accept and facilitate customer sample requests, ensuring proper handling and documentation. Operate material handling equipment safely, including forklifts, telehandlers, and pallet jacks. Operate company vehicles safely, including box trucks, in accordance with company policies and traffic regulations. Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hat, safety glasses, and steel-toed shoes, and use additional PPE as directed. Utilize safety harnesses and fall arrest systems when required by company policy. Cross-train with production teams to support broader plant operations. Assist with plant operations and maintenance activities as needed. Properly package products and prepare them for shipping in accordance with all relevant regulations and shipping industry standards. Answer incoming phone calls professionally and politely, routing or responding as appropriate. Communicate with customers and shipping company representatives by email in a clear, accurate, and professional manner. Provide documentation and shipment information to customers as needed. Receive and respond to after-hours calls to facilitate operations and support timely resolutions. Comply with all company food safety and occupational safety requirements at all times. Maintain a clean, food-safe, and occupationally safe truck bay and surrounding work areas. Participate actively in company trainings related to safety, quality, and operational procedures. Perform all other duties as assigned to support smooth and efficient plant operations. Essential Skills Demonstrated experience with material handling in an industrial, warehouse, or logistics environment. Hands-on experience with shipping and receiving processes, including loading and unloading trucks. Ability to safely operate forklifts and other material handling equipment such as telehandlers and pallet jacks. Ability to conduct basic inspection and initial lab analysis on inbound products to verify quality standards. Strong customer service skills, including professional phone and email communication. Proficiency with data entry and use of computer-based data management systems. Valid driver's license and ability to safely operate company vehicles, including box trucks. Comfort working at heights and ability to climb onto trailers and railcars while following safety procedures. Ability to routinely lift up to 75 pounds as part of daily duties. Consistent use of required PPE, including hard hat, safety glasses, and steel-toed footwear, and adherence to all safety policies. Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions, including exposure to dust, heat, noise, and fumes. Strong attention to detail and accuracy in documentation, recordkeeping, and verification of freight bills and shipping documents. Reliable, team-oriented work ethic with the ability to cross-train and support multiple operational areas. Additional Skills & Qualifications Comfort reviewing and preparing shipping documents such as packing lists and bills of lading. Ability to learn and follow food safety and occupational safety requirements. Willingness to cross-train with production and assist with plant operations and maintenance. Capability to handle after-hours calls and respond appropriately to operational needs. Strong organizational skills for managing inventory records, parts, and supplies. Willingness to participate in ongoing training and skill development. Potential for tuition support for continued education or relevant training (as offered by the employer). Why Work Here? Work Environment This role follows an 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. schedule in a primarily climate-controlled facility, with regular work both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions. The work environment includes exposure to dust, heat, noise, and fumes, and the position requires frequent climbing, lifting, and operation of material handling equipment and box trucks. Safety is a priority, with required PPE including steel-toed boots, hard hat, safety glasses, and additional protective equipment as needed; uniforms are provided after a period of employment. The setting is hands-on, fast-paced, and collaborative, with an emphasis on maintaining clean, food-safe, and occupationally safe work areas. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Ames, IA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $25.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
