A Logistics Specialist plans and manages logistics, including the distribution and transportation of supplies, equipment or materials for a company or organization. Develops order schedules and policies, tracks shipments, coordinates storage and works with suppliers and transportation companies. Implements efficient and cost-effective transportation and distribution systems.
The Transportation Specialist 1 supports the day-to-day execution of Durvet's transportation operations by providing operational support across inbound and outbound transportation activities, transportation systems, freight analysis, reporting, carrier communications, and continuous improvement initiatives. Working closely with the Transportation Manager, Inbound Planner, Transportation Specialist 3, Transportation Coordinator, this position helps ensure freight moves efficiently, accurately, and cost-effectively while strengthening business continuity through cross-training and operational support. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Transportation Operations Support the day-to-day execution of transportation operations while maintaining a broad understanding of inbound, outbound, and transportation support functions. Respond to internal requests for shipping quotes and process spot quotes and contract freight quotes within the Transportation Management System (TMS). Review, update, and resolve pending or "To Be Determined" shipment information to ensure transportation data remains accurate and current. Monitor freight movement using carrier websites, the TMS, and other transportation systems to verify shipment milestones and proactively communicate delays or issues. Transportation Planning Support Support the Inbound Planner and Transportation Specialist 3 by gathering operational information, monitoring transportation activity, preparing reports, and communicating issues requiring planner review. Assist the Transportation Specialist 3 in planning and managing daily warehouse order allocation and waving activities while collaborating closely with Warehouse and Customer Service teams. Develop working knowledge of inbound scheduling, dock capacity planning, and outbound transportation planning to provide operational support as assigned.
Note:
Daily ownership of inbound and outbound transportation planning remains with the Inbound Planner and Transportation Specialist 3. This position provides operational support and serves as trained backup coverage during absences and peak business periods. Compliance & Transportation Systems Assist with maintaining compliance with transportation regulations and company policies, including freight classification, NMFC coding, hazardous materials requirements, and transportation documentation. Update transportation-related information within FACTS ERP and other transportation systems to ensure accurate operational data. Monitor transportation industry publications, regulatory updates, and logistics bulletins to keep the department informed of relevant changes. Identify opportunities to improve transportation processes, workflow efficiency, and operational consistency. Develop, maintain, and update departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), work instructions, and process documentation. Support transportation projects, system enhancements, and continuous improvement initiatives. Performs other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
Required High school diploma or equivalent required. Five (5) or more years of experience in transportation, logistics, warehouse operations, supply chain, or a related field. Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel and Outlook. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills. Ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. Ability to build positive working relationships with employees, carriers, vendors, and customers. Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment. Ability to obtain Hazardous Materials (HazMat) certification within six months of hire. Preferred Associate degree in Supply Chain, Logistics, Business, or a related field preferred. Experience with HighJump/Koerber WMS. Experience with
FACTS ERP. OSHA 10
certification or ability to obtain after hire. Experience with Transportation Management Systems (TMS). Experience with Asana or similar project management software. Physical Demands Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time. Ability to read computer screens, written documents, and email. Ability to occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds.
