This role combines hands-on utility locating with field leadership, guiding horizontal directional drilling work while leading a crew day to day to ensure safe, accurate, and efficient installation of underground telecommunications infrastructure, including fiber optic and conduit systems.

Grand Rapids, MI (travel required throughout Michigan) Overview The HDD Locater / Foreman is responsible for accurately locating and tracking underground utilities, guiding horizontal directional drilling operations, and leading a crew in the field. This position plays a critical role in preventing utility strikes, maintaining bore accuracy, and keeping projects moving safely and efficiently. The ideal candidate will work closely with drill operators, crew members, and project supervisors to deliver clean, accurate, and productive bores. Responsibilities Operate and calibrate the Falcon F5+ locator to accurately identify underground infrastructure and guide HDD operations. Monitor bore progress, depths, and alignments to ensure accurate as-built documentation and quality control. Read and interpret construction blueprints, maps, and technical drawings to support site planning and drilling execution. Identify and avoid existing underground utilities using maps, locates, and field verification. Communicate clearly with drill operators, crew members, and supervisors to maintain safe and efficient operations. Lead and direct the crew daily, assigning tasks, coordinating workflow, and ensuring productivity on site. Assist with setup, operation, and teardown of drill equipment and related support machinery. Conduct utility locating and land surveying tasks before and during drilling as needed. Troubleshoot locator and field equipment issues and maintain tools in clean, working condition. Support general construction activities and material handling as needed. Document locating data, site conditions, and project progress accurately in logs and reports. Enforce company safety policies, traffic control plans, and all applicable regulations. Qualifications 3+ years of experience in telecommunications infrastructure, HDD, or related utility construction. Proficiency with the Falcon F5+ or similar underground utility locating systems. Experience with Vermeer directional drills, particularly the 20x22, preferred. Strong understanding of underground utility marking, locating methods, and utility-avoidance practices. Previous foreman, crew lead, or field leadership experience. Ability to read blueprints, technical drawings, and schematics. Familiarity with surveying techniques and modern locating tools. Strong communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Valid driver's license and clean driving record; CDL preferred but not required. Willingness to travel throughout Michigan. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions while maintaining a strong focus on safety and quality.
