Job Description

Position Summary The Operations Manager is a hands-on leader responsible for the safe, efficient, and compliant day-to-day operation of a sand and gravel mining site. This role combines frontline supervision with active involvement in equipment operation, production planning, maintenance oversight, and continuous improvement initiatives. The Operations Manager ensures the site meets production goals while maintaining the highest standards of safety, environmental compliance, and product quality. Key Responsibilities Oversee all onsite mining operations, including extraction, screening, stockpiling, loading, and reclamation activities. Lead, train, and supervise operators, technicians, and maintenance personnel to ensure safe and productive work practices. Operate and troubleshoot heavy equipment as needed (excavators, loaders, dozers, crushers, screens, conveyors). Coordinate and monitor preventative and corrective maintenance programs; manage equipment uptime and parts inventory. Plan and execute daily and weekly production schedules to meet sales demands and optimize plant throughput. Monitor and adjust processes to maintain material quality, including gradation and moisture specifications. Enforce compliance with all safety programs, including MSHA and applicable state regulations; conduct safety audits, lead toolbox talks, and oversee incident investigations and corrective actions. Ensure environmental compliance, including stormwater management, dust control, and site reclamation. Manage site-level costs, including labor and operating expenses; assist with budgeting and basic cost reporting. Coordinate with sales, dispatch, suppliers, and customers to support efficient logistics and site access. Maintain accurate production, maintenance, and regulatory records. Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives to increase efficiency, reduce downtime, and improve yield. Required Qualifications Minimum of 5 years of experience in aggregate, surface mining, quarry, or heavy construction operations, including progressive supervisory responsibility. Prior experience managing sand and gravel operations strongly preferred. Previous experience in frac sand processing, including drying and screening operations, is highly desirable. Demonstrated hands-on experience operating and maintaining heavy equipment (excavators, loaders, dozers, crushers, screens, conveyors, haul trucks). Working knowledge of MSHA regulations and environmental compliance requirements. Ability to read and interpret technical documents, including gradation charts, equipment manuals, and basic mechanical/hydraulic schematics. Valid driver's license required; CDL preferred or ability to obtain. High school diploma or equivalent required; technical training or degree in mining, construction management, or related field preferred. Skills & Competencies Strong commitment to safety and ability to consistently enforce standards. Effective leadership, coaching, and team development skills. Solid mechanical aptitude with strong troubleshooting capability. Strong organizational, planning, and time management skills. Clear and professional communication with employees, customers, and regulatory agencies. Basic computer proficiency (Microsoft Office and maintenance/production tracking systems). Physical & Work Environment Regular outdoor work in varying weather conditions. Frequent lifting, climbing, bending, and extended periods of standing and walking. Work performed around heavy equipment and moving machinery. Availability for extended hours, rotating shifts, weekends, and emergency call-outs as needed. Required use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, steel-toe boots, and high-visibility apparel. Pay:
$100,000.00 - $130,000.00 per year
