BERKELEY HERBAL CENTER
For over 30 years, the Berkeley Herbal Center (BHC) has been a cornerstone of the Bay Area's herbal medicine community — a place where rigorous clinical training, deep reverence for plant medicine, and a commitment to community health have grown together. Rooted in Berkeley and shaped by the Bay Area's spirit of innovation, diversity, and deep commitment to community wellbeing, BHC is a nonprofit school dedicated to cultivating the next generation of clinical herbalists. We recognize that our students descend from many rich and diverse herbal traditions, and we actively celebrate and integrate that diversity into everything we do. BHC offers eight distinct certification programs, including our comprehensive Clinical Practicum. Our educational model weaves rigorous academic study with deep hands-on clinical practice —preparing future practitioners with the knowledge, confidence, and ethical grounding to offer sustainable, accessible herbal medicine to their communities. At the heart of BHC is our busy, low-cost Community Clinic, where students work directly with clients under the close guidance of experienced clinical faculty. Beyond formal training, BHC fosters a living love for plants through short courses, public health days, and free community events.
ABOUT THE ROLE BHC
is entering a pivotal chapter: our student body has grown and diversified, our certification programs are expanding, and the organization is building the infrastructure needed to serve students, faculty, and the greater community with excellence for decades to come. The Executive Director will be both a visionary and empathetic leader and a skilled manager — someone who can hold the academic and clinical integrity of our programs, support our students, and strengthen the operational, financial, and cultural foundations of the organization. Critically, this ED will lead a team, not carry the organization alone. We are looking for someone who deeply understands clinical herbalism, can work towards creating a culture of care, has compassion and curiosity, and can speak credibly to students, faculty, and community partners about the trajectory of the field. The Executive Director is a full-time, on-site position based at BHC's Berkeley office. Regular in-person presence is expected and essential to providing consistent leadership, visibility, and support to staff and students.
YOUR LEADERSHIP TEAM
The ED will lead and be supported by the following roles: Executive Assistant — manages daily administrative operations, calendar, board support, and logistics. Academic Coordinator — owns curriculum delivery, faculty communication, and student-facing documentation across all certification programs Retail Shop Manager — leads the retail department autonomously; reports to ED for strategic alignment Pharmacy Director — leads the dispensary autonomously; reports to ED for strategic alignment Clinic Director — oversees community clinic operations and clinical faculty
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Academic Program Integrity The ED holds vision and accountability for all certification programs. Day-to-day academic coordination is managed by the Academic Coordinator. Set and uphold academic standards and learning outcomes across all certification programs Hire, support, and evaluate the Academic Coordinator Recruit and retain qualified clinical herbalism instructors and teaching staff Maintain Community Guidelines and systems for student support and grievance resolution Ensure students receive clear, proactive communication about program requirements and expectations Operations & Compliance The ED owns compliance fully — both strategy and execution. The Executive Assistant supports administrative operations. Conduct and maintain a thorough audit of all administrative and operating compliance gaps Maintain organized systems for employment records, legal filings, leases, and policy documentation Hire and support an Executive Assistant to manage daily administrative operations Maintain and update organizational policies; ensure they are followed in classrooms and clinical settings Implement tech onboarding and training for staff members Financial Sustainability & Fundraising The ED leads fundraising strategy and donor stewardship. The Board of Directors actively participates in donor relationships and fundraising activity. Develop and execute a fundraising strategy in partnership with the Board, including grants, individual donors, and community campaigns Cultivate and steward key donor and partner relationships Develop and manage the annual budget in partnership with the Board Treasurer Explore and develop new revenue streams in alignment with BHC's mission Manage all leases and rental agreements with attention to cost-containment Marketing, Communications & Enrollment The ED owns marketing strategy and hands-on execution. A Marketing Coordinator is a planned future hire; until that role is filled, the ED manages all marketing functions directly. Develop and execute a comprehensive marketing strategy to grow enrollment and community visibility Manage digital marketing channels directly: SEO, Google Ads, social media, and email campaigns Oversee a full website rebuild — vetting vendors, managing the project timeline, and ensuring the site reflects BHC's brand and programs Establish and maintain a consistent brand voice across all platforms Monitor enrollment trends and adjust strategy accordingly Maintain proficiency in organizational tools including QuickBooks, G Suite, Google Classroom, Google Ads, Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Office, Zoom, and LillySoft Retail Shop & Pharmacy — Strategic Oversight Only The Retail Shop Manager and Pharmacy Director each lead their own departments. The ED provides executive oversight and strategic alignment, not day-to-day management. Partner with department leads on strategic growth goals aligned with BHC's mission and financial targets Support and develop less experienced department leads, particularly the Retail Shop Manager Identify opportunities to grow departmental offerings in alignment with BHC's educational mission Culture, Diversity & Community Actively foster an inclusive, nourishing, and psychologically safe work and learning environment Center accessibility and equity in admissions, programming, and organizational policy Represent BHC publicly with warmth, professionalism, and deep knowledge of the field Engage meaningfully with the broader Bay Area herbalism and wellness community Leadership & Governance Articulate BHC's mission; inspire and engage the Board, staff, students, and community Direct the organization in fulfillment of its mission and strategic plan Compile and submit quarterly and annual reports to the Board Manage confidential incident reports and coordinate with BHC's legal counsel as needed Personnel & Human Resources Hire, supervise, and evaluate all department heads and support staff Manage all employment records, timesheets, and HR compliance Build a professional support team including consultants, coaches, and service providers as needed Work with the Board to hire and evaluate the organizational bookkeeper/treasurer
