Key Responsibilities Strategic and Transitional Leadership Direct day-to-day operations and provide oversight for programs, shelter services, and administrative functions to ensure uninterrupted, high-quality service delivery. Partner with the Board to conduct a structural and operational review, identify opportunities for improvement, and prepare the agency for incoming permanent leadership. Guide the organization through transition using effective conflict resolution and change management strategies that maintain stability and mission focus. Financial Oversight and Compliance

- Monitor organizational financial health in partnership with the Director of Finance and the Board, including budget allocation, cash flow, and financial reporting integrity.
- Ensure program activities and expenditures align with local, state, and federal grant requirements, including Cal OES, HUD, and the City of Long Beach.
- Provide executive-level support to the Director of Philanthropy to nurture donor relationships and sustain fundraising momentum during the transition. Personnel and Organizational Culture
- Manage, mentor, and support a leadership team of Directors and an Office Manager, facilitating regular meetings to ensure alignment.
- Foster a supportive organizational culture that strengthens staff morale and retention while helping mitigate vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue.
- Monitor performance and provide technical guidance and executive coaching to uphold trauma-informed care and professional conduct standards. Board Relations and Succession Support
- Provide transparent, regular operational and financial updates to the Board of Directors.
- Facilitate Board and committee meetings alongside the Director of Executive Affairs.
- Assist the Board with the executive search process by providing operational insights that help shape the profile of the incoming Executive Director.
- Monitor organizational exposure and liability, ensuring adherence to legal, safety, and insurance protocols. Required Qualifications and Competencies Experience and Education
- 10+ years of progressive senior leadership experience, with a proven track record as an Interim Executive Director or CEO for nonprofit organizations undergoing significant transition and growth.
- Master's degree in Nonprofit Management, Business Administration, Public Administration, Social Work, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in high-volume residential or crisis intervention settings. Specialized Knowledge
- Deep expertise in Safe House operations, including confidentiality protocols, physical security management, and the Empowerment Model of survivor advocacy.
- Proficiency in the Lethality Assessment Program (LAP) or equivalent domestic violence risk assessment tools.
- State-Certified 40-Hour Domestic Violence Counselor per California Evidence Code §1037.1, or ability to complete certification within 30 days of hire. Professional Competencies
- Tactical stewardship: Ability to rapidly assess complex organizational cultures, financial structures, and program efficacy and deliver data-driven recommendations.
- Exceptional communication: Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with the presence and polish to represent WSLB effectively to the Board, staff, donors, and broader community.
- Ethical leadership: Unwavering commitment to survivor confidentiality, safety, and the integrity of the domestic violence service system.
