Position Overview Job Type:
Full-time (40 hours per week)
Salary:
$70,000 - $80,000 per year, commensurate with experience.

Wilmington, NC and the greater Cape Fear Region (hybrid) Summary Plastic Ocean Project is a nonprofit headquartered in Wilmington, North Carolina, united around a powerful mission: to identify science-based solutions to the plastic pollution crisis, and to inspire individuals to make informed choices that strengthen both human and environmental health. By combining cutting-edge research, grassroots action, and creative outreach, we bridge the gap between science and the public. Our work not only raises awareness but also drives real, measurable change in communities and ecosystems worldwide. The Executive Director serves as the chief executive and strategic leader of Plastic Ocean Project, responsible for overall organizational management, fundraising, program development, and community engagement. This is an exciting opportunity for a passionate leader who brings both a scientific background and a commitment to inclusive, community-driven work. Serving as the spokesperson for our organization, this role offers the opportunity to lead a science-based organization through a transformative period of growth and discovery. Our team is seeking a mission-driven leader who can strengthen organizational operations, expand fundraising capacity, and serve as a compelling public advocate for science-based solutions to the plastic pollution crisis. At Plastic Ocean Project, the executive director will play a central role in developing, refining, and executing the company's business strategy in close partnership with the Board of Directors, translating strategic direction into actionable plans and driving organizational alignment and performance.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership & Strategy Provide vision and strategic direction for programs, operations, and growth Champion an inclusive and expansive approach to plastic pollution mitigation Partner with the Board to implement long-term plans and organizational priorities Serve as the primary spokesperson and ambassador for the organization Fundraising & Development Lead and execute a comprehensive fundraising strategy across diverse revenue streams Plan and implement a capital campaign to support growth and research and policy initiatives Cultivate and steward major donors and key funding partners Oversee grant writing, reporting, and compliance Operations & Research Oversight Manage day-to-day operations, including supervision of a small staff and interns Cultivate and expand research partnerships and programs to support organizational objectives and strengthen external collaboration Maintain compliance with all licensing, insurance, registration, membership, solicitation, and business record requirements, including workers' compensation audits Oversee budgeting, financial management, and organizational systems Implement effective use of CRM systems and alignment across communications, programs, and fundraising Direct brand outreach and engagement Board & Community Engagement Support and empower the Board as ambassadors and fundraisers Build strong partnerships locally, regionally, and nationally Engage volunteers, stakeholders, and community members in meaningful ways Promote equitable and inclusive engagement in volunteer efforts
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a related field Five years of progressive, professional experience- including leadership or managerial responsibilities Educational or professional background in environmental sciences- preferably in the field of chemistry or plastic research Proven ability to scale or grow an organization Strong leadership, organizational, and decision-making skills Strong mission-based public speaking and presentation skills Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of stakeholders, employees, and corporate partners Proven fundraising success, including but not limited to: Securing major gifts Foundation grants Managing corporate partnerships Evening and weekend availability for special events Occasional physical activity during field visits or events Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record; ability to transport program materials for local outreach and fundraising activities
Preferred Qualifications:
Public health, policy, or advocacy experience Familiarity with non-profit leadership Grant-writing experience Proven organizational, financial, and team management skills Excellent communication and public speaking abilities Proficiency with
