July 6, 2026 Summary of Duties The Executive Director serves as the public face of the Waterford Foundation and is responsible for advancing the organization's mission to preserve and interpret the National Historic Landmark of Waterford, Virginia, and educate the public about its history and cultural landscape. The Executive Director leads fundraising efforts, expands and enhances donor relations, oversees Board governance processes, and guides all day-to-day Foundation's strategy and operations. A key priority for the next Executive Director is expanding philanthropic support and enhancing the Foundation's relationships within the Washington, DC local and regional nonprofit and donor community. Evening and weekend work are a part of this job. The job is full-time, exempt, and located in Waterford, Virginia. Essential Job Functions External Relations Serve as the public representative of the Foundation; Build partnerships with preservation organizations, nonprofits, and government agencies through formal and informal contacts, presentations and meetings; and Engage and expand regional audiences and Foundation stakeholders. Fundraising and Development Develop and lead the Foundation's fundraising strategy and cultivate donors and philanthropic partners; Expand relationships within the local and regional donor community; Design and support Board fundraising efforts; Develop and execute a strategy to pursue philanthropic and public grants; and Oversee membership development and annual giving programs. Board Relations Manage all operational aspects of the Foundation Board of Directors; Provide Board members with strategic advice and operational reporting; and Support governance and Board committee work. Organizational Operations and Leadership Implement strategic goals established by the Board; Provide leadership and supervision for Foundation staff; Recruit, hire, develop, and manage qualified staff; Manage day-to-day operations and programs; Foster a collaborative, positive "can do" organizational culture. Financial Management In coordination with the Board, develop and manage annual operating budget, and In coordination with Board Executive Committee, ensure sound financial practices and reporting are in place and help implement a new three-year budget planning process to support long-term financial sustainability and decision making. Preservation and Education Program Oversight Ensure effective stewardship of historic properties and assets, Oversee educational and interpretive programs. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree Minimum five years leadership experience in nonprofit organizations Proven success in fundraising strategy development and execution, including major gift and donor cultivation Demonstrated familiarity with local and regional philanthropic and nonprofit networks Strong organization and time management skills with experience successfully managing staff and professional non-profit operations Proven ability to build positive and productive relationships with donors, partners, and community stakeholders Strong written and verbal communication skills, including persuasive public speaking ability Experience with successful grant writing Demonstrated experience managing nonprofit budgets and financial reporting Demonstrated commitment to historic preservation and education Desired Qualifications Experience leading historic preservation or cultural heritage organizations Knowledge of historic property stewardship, easements, or preservation planning Established relationships within local regional donor networks Experience with local tourism, heritage interpretation, or museum programs A graduate degree in nonprofit management, public administration, history, preservation, or related field is a plus Compensation and Benefits 5-day (40 hour) work week in office, Monday-Friday; some evening/weekend work required during the Waterford Fair and other events and meetings Annual salary range: $75,000- 80,000 Paid time off and holidays 403(b) retirement plan available Occasional remote work possible Application Process Applicants should submit: Cover letter Resume Writing sample (newsletter, article, donor update, etc.
