Job Description
The Territory Manager is responsible for overall territory performance, including people, operations, customer service, safety, and financial results. This hands-on leader builds strong teams and processes while ensuring safe, efficient execution aligned with Walters' service standards and Core Values. The Territory Manager owns territory P&L performance, develops leaders, improves processes, supports logistics and capacity planning, and builds strong customer relationships. This entrepreneurial leader thinks and acts like a business owner, takes initiative, and steps directly into the operation when needed to support the team and meet customer commitments. This role is critical to building an accountable, customer-focused, financially strong territory that consistently delivers operational excellence and supports growth. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities Leadership & Team Support Provide visible, hands-on leadership in the yard, during dispatch, and in the field Set clear expectations, priorities, and accountability while reinforcing Walters' Core Values Coach and develop leaders and team members to improve performance, service, and efficiency Lead recruiting, onboarding, training, and ongoing team development Partner with HR and Operations Leadership on performance management, recognition, and retention Build a culture of ownership, accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement Daily Operations & Service Execution Own daily territory execution and align labor, trucks, units, equipment, and materials to demand Ensure route completion, accurate documentation, SOP adherence, and effective use of labor and capacity Partner with Central Planning to improve routing, density, capacity, and service execution Step directly into field, yard, routing, customer, or service work when needed while addressing root causes through stronger people and processes Ensure yard, shop, staging, and operating areas remain clean, organized, efficient, and safe Monitor service quality, productivity, customer satisfaction, and operating results; act on gaps quickly Yard, Fleet, and Equipment Readiness Ensure vehicles, units, tools, inventory, and supplies support operational needs Maintain awareness of fleet and equipment condition and ensure issues are resolved promptly Maintain accurate inventory and control unit, supply, and material costs Partner with Fleet on PMs, repairs, truck availability, downtime, and asset planning Maintain effective tagging, unit rotation, washing, staging, and asset-control processes Safety & Quality Control Own territory safety performance and enforce all safety policies, PPE requirements, SOPs, and regulations Ensure completion of safety observations, toolbox talks, QA inspections, and corrective follow-up Ensure accidents, near misses, unsafe conditions, and corrective actions are addressed promptly Partner with Operations Leadership and Safety on investigations and preventive actions Hold leaders and drivers accountable for safe driving, pre/post-trip expectations, and safe work behaviors Customer Service & Communication Maintain clear communication with team members, customers, and cross-functional partners Own operational customer issues, resolve problems quickly, and ensure appropriate follow-through Partner with Sales and Customer Service to support growth, service needs, and customer commitments Build a customer-first culture and reinforce Walters' "Our Service is the Difference" mindset Training & Compliance Ensure hands-on training, cross-training, and leader development for new and existing team members Ensure training records, signoffs, and compliance documentation are current Build, reinforce, and improve standard processes and daily expectations Ensure adherence to DOT regulations, environmental policies, and company standards Administration & Reporting Review territory operating and financial performance; ensure required documentation is accurate and timely Use operating and financial data to identify gaps and improvement opportunities Own labor planning, including staffing, scheduling, overtime, and productivity Communicate territory risks and performance with clear action plans Own territory P&L performance, including revenue, labor, operating expenses, productivity, asset utilization, and controllable costs; partner with Finance on budgets, forecasts, and billing accuracy On-Call & Emergency Support Participate in on-call rotation and lead through after-hours needs, emergencies, weather events, and special operations Coordinate after-hours response and step into the operation when needed Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or GED; related Bachelor's degree preferred Proven people leadership experience in logistics, transportation, field service, distribution, waste services, or similar operations, including direct P&L management responsibility Demonstrated success developing people and leaders, improving processes, and delivering strong customer service Valid driver's license; ability to obtain/maintain DOT Medical Card; able to work hands-on when needed Skills, Knowledge, Abilities Strong understanding of field service operations, logistics, transportation, routing, or similar environments Prior P&L management experience with strong financial acumen and the ability to manage revenue, budgets, labor, expenses, productivity, and margins Proven ability to build people, processes, accountability, and sustainable operating routines Strong customer service orientation and ability to partner effectively across functions Entrepreneurial, business-owner mindset with sound judgment, initiative, and the ability to balance people, customer, growth, safety, service, and financial priorities Work Environment and Physical Requirements Ability to lift up to 50 pounds Ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods, perform frequent keyboarding and computer work, and operate standard office equipment in a professional office environment Diverse work environment such as: office, warehouse, vehicle/property maintenance shop, yard Ability to work in an environment frequently exposed to weather, noise, chemicals, and waste Ability to travel 50% - primarily to be within assigned
