Job Description

Take ownership of the day-to-day operations of a growing construction company Hybrid — Approximately 90% Remote | Nevada County, CA | Approximately 20-30 Hours/Week | Room to Grow With the Company We're looking for someone unusually capable who can grow into operational leadership. Happy House is a growing construction company with employees, subcontractors, active projects, schedules, clients, payments, dozens of daily communications, and a rapidly evolving operating system. Your job is to keep the whole thing under control—and make it better. Projects need to move. Clients need to know what is happening. Commitments need to be kept. Problems need to be caught before they become emergencies. Money needs to be collected. The team needs clarity. A strong candidate for this position will operator should be able to look across an inbox, project schedule, client account, task board, and team workload and quickly understand what matters now, what can wait, what needs follow-up, where something may be slipping, and who needs to take the next step. We are looking for someone assertive who thrives on taking responsibility. We are not looking for someone who wants to be given a list every morning. We're looking for the confident, humble, capable person who looks at the operation and says: "I've got it." And we aren't looking for someone to simply administer our current systems exactly as they exist today. We care about the outcomes. If there is a cleaner, faster, more reliable way to accomplish them, we want you to see it, bring it forward, and help us build it. This Is Also a Growth Position You will have the opportunity to become deeply involved in how a growing company is run—from projects, people, and clients to systems, financial workflows, AI, and automation. Happy House is an AI-forward company operating at the leading edge of AI adoption in the building trades. We believe artificial intelligence is fundamentally changing how all of us work. We want someone willing to take the possibilities emerging at this new frontier and wrestle them into real-world improvements inside a real business, working with real employees, subcontractors, and customers. Our ambition is to systematize excellence in home maintenance so we can deliver an exceptional customer experience at greater scale and eventually expand beyond Nevada County. You would play an important role in building that future. AI training is part of this position, and we actively encourage experimentation with better ways of working. This Position Is Not for Everyone You may be a strong fit if people have repeatedly trusted you with more responsibility because you figure things out, keep your word, notice what others miss, follow through relentlessly, and make the people and systems around you better.
You are probably:
Resourceful and difficult to stop when you encounter an obstacle. Excellent at deciding what matters now and what can wait. Exceptionally strong at follow-through and keeping track of many moving pieces. Comfortable respectfully holding people accountable. Detail-oriented without losing sight of the big picture. Calm when plans change or several things demand attention at once. A fast learner who enjoys improving systems. Humble enough to recognize mistakes, fix them, and learn from them. Comfortable with a little bit of everything—from QuickBooks and Google Sheets to invoicing, scheduling, client communication, and project tracking. If you need frequent direction, avoid accountability conversations, become overwhelmed by competing priorities, or generally wait for someone else to identify the next step, this will probably not be a good fit. The person we're looking for is confident, capable, takes ownership, and is probably known by the people around them as an over-achiever. Your Scorecard 1. Operational Control Projects, commitments, schedules, payments, and important communications remain visible, current, and actively managed every day. The owners should not need to constantly ask: "Did someone handle that?" You know what is happening, what needs attention, what can wait, who owns the next step, and when it will be completed. 2. Project Completion & Cash Collection Projects move cleanly from: Signed contract → deposit → scheduling → production → completion → invoicing → final payment You identify stalled projects and dropped handoffs early and take action, give marching orders, follow up, and do what it takes to keep work moving. 3. Client Trust Earning and protecting client trust is at the heart of your responsibility. Clients are proactively informed. Problems are addressed quickly. Commitments are clear and dependable. Clients should not routinely need to chase us for information or receive confusing mixed messages, changing commitments, or preventable surprises. 4. Team Accountability Assignments have clear owners and deadlines. Employees and subcontractors know what is expected of them, commitments are followed through to completion, and problems are addressed rather than allowed to drift. This is a management position, not simply an assistant position. 5. Continuous Improvement You don't just fight the same fires over and over. Recurring problems are identified at their root. Workflows get cleaner. SOPs improve. Unnecessary steps disappear. When one of our existing systems isn't working well, we want you to help improve it—not simply work harder around the problem. AI and automation are used wherever they can meaningfully improve speed, reliability, communication, customer experience, or operational visibility. Experience We care more about what you have successfully taken responsibility for than the titles you have held. Strong candidates will generally have several years of responsibility in operations management, project management, construction administration, home services, field service, trades, or another fast-moving project-based business, with excellent professional references. Construction or home-service experience is strongly preferred. You should be someone who thrives managing many projects, people, deadlines, client conversations, schedules, and open loops simultaneously. We currently work across tools including ClickUp, Google Workspace, QuickBooks Online, CompanyCam, DocuSign, ChatGPT, and AI/automation platforms. Experience with QuickBooks and basic functionality in Google Calendar and Google Sheets is preferred. We are looking for a quick and adaptable learner—someone teachable, curious, and excited to learn, grow, and take on greater responsibility. Compensation & Schedule $24-$31/hour depending on demonstrated experience and capability. 20-30 hours per week , primarily Monday-Friday between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM, with some flexibility. You must have availability every Monday between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM . Tuesday and Friday offer greater flexibility, with target availability around 9:00 AM-12:00 PM and 3:00-5:00 PM. Approximately 90% of the position is remote , with occasional local responsibilities in Nevada County and surrounding areas, such as dropping flyers at the post office, depositing checks, or picking up payments. There will be a 90-day performance review with an opportunity for increased compensation and responsibility based on demonstrated results.
