Executive Director Nonprofit Homeless & Veteran Support Organization Position Summary The Executive Director (ED) is the chief executive and administrative leader of the organization and is responsible for the overall management, direction, financial health, regulatory compliance, and day-to-day success of the nonprofit. The Executive Director works closely with the Board of Directors to carry out the organization's mission, implement Board-approved policies and strategic priorities, maintain strong relationships with funders and community partners, and ensure that programs and services are delivered safely, effectively, and with dignity. The ED is responsible for creating a culture of accountability, compassion, professionalism, and respect for the Veterans and individuals served by the organization. The Executive Director reports directly to the Board of Directors . Essential Responsibilities1. Organizational Leadership Provide overall leadership and direction for the organization in accordance with its mission, bylaws, policies, and strategic plan. Implement policies and directives approved by the Board of Directors. Establish clear organizational goals, priorities, and performance expectations. Ensure that employees understand their roles, responsibilities, and reporting structure. Maintain a professional, respectful, and accountable organizational culture. Serve as the primary point of leadership between the Board, employees, volunteers, Veterans/residents, community partners, funders, and other stakeholders. Identify organizational challenges and present appropriate solutions and recommendations to the Board. Ensure that the organization operates in a manner consistent with its nonprofit mission and values. 2. Staff Leadership & Human Resources Recruit, hire, supervise, evaluate, and, when necessary, terminate employees in accordance with Board-approved policies and applicable law. Establish appropriate job descriptions, staffing levels, schedules, and performance expectations. Ensure employees receive appropriate training and understand organizational policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Hold staff accountable for performance, attendance, documentation, conduct, and compliance. Work with the Operations Director/Manager to ensure effective daily staffing and shelter operations. Address employee concerns through the appropriate chain of command. Promote teamwork and effective communication among all departments and shifts. Ensure appropriate documentation of employee performance and disciplinary matters. 3. Shelter Operations & Resident Services Ensure the shelter operates in a safe, professional, clean, and respectful environment. Oversee the organization's programs and services to ensure they meet the needs of Veterans and individuals experiencing homelessness. Ensure residents receive appropriate support, referrals, case management, and access to available community resources. Ensure shelter policies, curfew requirements, substance-use policies, visitor policies, room standards, safety procedures, and other SOPs are consistently implemented. Monitor program outcomes and identify opportunities for improvement. Ensure appropriate incident reporting, resident documentation, and program records are maintained. Work with the Operations Director and program staff to resolve operational concerns. Ensure the organization maintains a trauma-informed, Veteran-centered, and dignity-focused environment. 4. Financial Management Maintain overall responsibility for the financial health and fiscal management of the organization. Work with the Treasurer, Board, bookkeeper/accountant, and appropriate staff to develop and monitor the annual operating budget. Monitor revenue, expenses, cash flow, payroll, accounts payable, and accounts receivable. Ensure expenditures are consistent with the approved budget and organizational policies. Provide regular financial reports and updates to the Board of Directors. Review financial performance and identify potential financial risks or shortfalls. Ensure appropriate internal controls are maintained. Work with accounting professionals to ensure accurate financial records and timely reporting. Assist with preparation for annual audits, financial reviews, grant reporting, and governmental requirements. 5. Grants, Government Contracts & Compliance Maintain overall accountability for compliance with applicable federal, state, local, and funding-agency requirements. Oversee government contracts and grant-funded programs. Ensure grant deliverables, reports, invoices, supporting documentation, and deadlines are properly managed. Maintain accurate records necessary to support government and grant reimbursement. Monitor compliance with applicable Veteran, homelessness, housing, employment, privacy, safety, and nonprofit regulations. Ensure corrective actions are promptly addressed when compliance issues are identified. Work with staff and outside professionals as necessary to prepare for audits, monitoring visits, inspections, and reviews. 6. Fundraising & Development Lead the organization's fundraising and development efforts in partnership with the Board and development staff/volunteers. Develop relationships with individual donors, corporations, foundations, civic organizations, Veteran organizations, churches, community groups, and other potential supporters. Identify and pursue appropriate grant opportunities. Support annual fundraising campaigns, special events, sponsorships, major gifts, and other revenue-generating activities. Maintain strong relationships with existing donors and community supporters. Ensure donors receive appropriate acknowledgment and stewardship. Work with the Board to establish and achieve fundraising goals. 7. Community & External Relations The Executive Director serves as a primary ambassador for the organization.
Responsibilities include:
Represent the organization professionally within the community. Develop relationships with Veteran organizations, governmental agencies, healthcare providers, housing organizations, social-service agencies, businesses, foundations, and community leaders. Attend appropriate community meetings, networking events, fundraising activities, and Veteran-related events. Communicate the organization's mission and impact to the public. Serve as an organizational spokesperson when authorized by the Board. Develop positive relationships with local media and community organizations. Promote awareness of homelessness and the needs of Veterans while protecting resident privacy and dignity. 8. Board Relations & Governance Report directly to the Board of Directors. Provide the Board with timely, accurate, and complete information necessary for effective oversight. Prepare or coordinate regular Board reports regarding operations, finances, staffing, compliance, programs, fundraising, and organizational performance. Attend Board meetings as requested and provide management reports and recommendations. Implement Board-approved decisions and policies. Maintain an appropriate separation between Board governance and staff management. Bring significant organizational risks, legal issues, financial concerns, personnel matters, or compliance issues to the Board's attention.
