Our Land Development Division supports residential subdivision development through site work, land clearing, mass grading, erosion control, storm drainage, utility installation, and infrastructure development. As our operations continue to grow, we are seeking an experienced Land Development Field Superintendent to provide leadership and oversight for field operations across multiple active residential development projects. Our office is located in Elgin, SC, with field operations taking place at active project sites throughout the Greater Columbia, SC territory. Position Summary The Land Development Field Superintendent is responsible for overseeing the safe, efficient, and timely execution of field operations across multiple residential land-development projects. This position provides direct leadership to Crew Leads, Heavy Equipment Operators, Erosion Control Crew Members, and other field personnel while coordinating manpower, equipment, materials, schedules, and daily priorities across multiple active job sites. The Superintendent serves as a critical link between field operations and project leadership and is expected to maintain a strong presence in the field. This individual must be capable of evaluating site conditions, anticipating operational needs, identifying problems before they impact production, and holding crews accountable for safety, quality, productivity, equipment care, and environmental compliance. This role requires a strong combination of people leadership, land-development experience, erosion-control knowledge, heavy-equipment experience, planning, and field problem-solving ability. The ideal candidate is an experienced field leader who understands how residential subdivisions are developed from the ground up and can effectively manage multiple crews and projects without losing sight of safety, quality, compliance, or schedule. Key Responsibilities Oversee daily field operations across multiple active residential land-development projects. Directly supervise and coordinate multiple field crews, Crew Leads, Heavy Equipment Operators, and other assigned field personnel. Plan and prioritize daily and weekly field activities based on project schedules, site conditions, manpower, equipment availability, and operational needs. Coordinate the deployment of employees, equipment, materials, and other resources across multiple active job sites. Establish clear expectations for Crew Leads and field personnel and hold team members accountable for safety, productivity, workmanship, attendance, and professional conduct. Monitor project progress and adjust field resources and priorities as conditions change. Oversee field activities associated with erosion control, mass grading, clearing, site preparation, storm drainage, infrastructure, material movement, and other land-development operations. Ensure erosion and sediment control measures are properly installed, maintained, inspected, and repaired in accordance with applicable requirements. Maintain working knowledge of Best Management Practices (BMPs), Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPPs), and applicable environmental requirements. Conduct routine site inspections to evaluate safety, quality, production, erosion-control compliance, equipment utilization, and overall job-site conditions. Identify deficiencies and ensure corrective actions are assigned, communicated, documented, and completed promptly. Read and interpret site plans, grading plans, erosion-control plans, construction drawings, layouts, and other project documentation. Coordinate with project managers, other superintendents, inspectors, developers, subcontractors, vendors, and field personnel to address project needs and resolve issues. Communicate project status, manpower needs, equipment needs, delays, site concerns, and other operational matters to leadership. Anticipate upcoming project needs and proactively coordinate manpower, equipment, and materials to minimize delays and downtime. Oversee the safe and productive use of heavy equipment throughout field operations. Ensure equipment is assigned appropriately based on operator experience, qualifications, and project needs. Monitor equipment condition and ensure required inspections, routine maintenance, and repair needs are properly communicated and addressed. Promote responsible care and use of company vehicles, equipment, tools, and materials. Provide hands-on field support and equipment operation when necessary based on operational needs and individual qualifications. Train, coach, mentor, and develop Crew Leads and field employees. Reinforce company safety requirements, OSHA standards, environmental requirements, and established operating procedures. Investigate and promptly communicate job-site safety concerns, equipment incidents, property damage, environmental concerns, or other significant field events. Maintain accurate documentation regarding daily activities, site conditions, completed work, inspections, corrective actions, and project progress. Support leadership with evaluating field performance, staffing needs, employee development, and operational improvements. Promote a professional, respectful, accountable, and team-oriented work environment. Perform additional land-development and field-management responsibilities based on business and project needs. Required Qualifications Previous professional experience in land development, site development, grading, erosion control, heavy civil construction, or a closely related field is required. Previous superintendent, foreman, field manager, or comparable construction leadership experience is required. Demonstrated experience supervising multiple field employees and/or crews simultaneously. Strong understanding of residential land-development and site-work operations. Working knowledge of erosion and sediment control practices and BMPs. Experience coordinating manpower, heavy equipment, materials, and field schedules across active construction projects. Hands-on heavy-equipment operating experience and strong understanding of safe equipment operations. Ability to effectively supervise Heavy Equipment Operators and evaluate safe and appropriate equipment use. Ability to read and interpret site plans, grading plans, erosion-control plans, construction drawings, and related project documentation. Ability to identify field deficiencies, prioritize corrective actions, and follow issues through completion. Strong leadership skills with the ability to coach employees, establish expectations, address performance concerns, and hold teams accountable. Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple active projects and competing priorities. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Strong judgment and field problem-solving abilities. Valid driver's license and ability to meet company driving requirements. Reliable attendance and dependable transportation. Ability and willingness to travel between active project sites throughout the Greater Columbia, SC territory. Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather and site conditions. Ability to perform the physical demands of the position when field conditions require. Preferred Experience Residential subdivision development experience SWPPP certification or significant SWPPP compliance experience Experience managing three or more field crews simultaneously Mass grading experience Erosion-control operations Storm drainage installation Clearing and site preparation Infrastructure and utility-related site work Experience working directly with inspectors, developers, engineers, project managers, and other construction professionals Experience training and developing Crew Leads, Foremen, or Heavy Equipment Operators Experience with production planning, manpower allocation, and equipment scheduling Hands-on experience operating dozers, excavators, loaders, off-road dump trucks, motor graders, water trucks, skid steers, mini excavators, or similar heavy equipment Strong mechanical understanding of heavy construction equipment and preventative maintenance practices What We're Looking For We are looking for more than someone who can simply manage a schedule.
