Job Title:
Crate Builder Job Description This is a 1st shift and long-term opportunity that focuses on building custom skids and crates, packaging parts for shipment, and loading semis in a climate-controlled, small job shop environment. You use hand and power tools, operate a forklift, and handle shipping and receiving tasks to ensure products are accurately packaged, documented, and shipped on time. The position is physically active and offers strong opportunities for growth, including training on machinery and other advanced shop responsibilities. Qualified individuals are encouraged to apply! Responsibilities Build custom skids and crates to safely ship parts and products. Package materials and prepare orders for shipment in accordance with company standards. Load and unload semis and trucks using appropriate equipment, including forklifts. Use hand tools, power tools, saws, and tape measures to cut, assemble, and secure materials. Accurately log weights, dimensions, and other shipment details on required paperwork. Perform shipping and receiving tasks, including checking in materials and staging outgoing shipments. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area through regular housekeeping and cleaning. Follow all safety procedures when operating tools, forklifts, and other equipment. Collaborate with team members on team lifts for heavier items (50 lbs or more). Demonstrate reliability, sound judgment, and a strong work ethic in daily tasks. Learn and adapt to new processes and equipment, with the potential to train on machines and expand responsibilities. Support production and shipping schedules by working assigned shifts and overtime as needed. Essential Skills Experience with hand tools such as hammers, drills, and wrenches in a construction or carpentry setting. Experience with power tools, including saws and other cutting or fastening equipment. Ability to accurately read and use a tape measure for cutting and assembly tasks. Experience in carpentry, construction, or building work that involves working with wood and structural materials. Experience in shipping, warehouse, or shipping and receiving environments. Ability to safely operate a forklift for loading and unloading trucks and semis. Capability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting and moving materials with team assistance for heavier items. Strong dependability and consistent attendance, with the ability to follow instructions and work independently. Valid driver's license. Attention to detail for logging weights, dimensions, and completing paperwork accurately. Additional Skills & Qualifications Previous experience in a warehouse or job shop environment. Experience with loading and unloading trucks in a shipping and receiving role. Familiarity with climate-controlled manufacturing or machining environments. Demonstrated ability to learn new tools, machinery, and processes quickly. Construction or carpentry experience, can train on forklifts and other job details. Interest in growing into machine operation and other advanced shop responsibilities. Why Work Here? Work Environment The role is based in a small, family-owned job shop with a temperature-controlled environment maintained at approximately 73 degrees year-round due to the machinery in use. You work on first shift, Monday through Friday, from about 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with voluntary Saturday work that is typically scheduled at least once per month and opportunities for overtime by starting earlier when needed. The work is hands-on and physical, involving regular use of hand tools, power tools, saws, tape measures, and forklifts in a production and shipping setting. The environment emphasizes safety, cleanliness, and teamwork, with a focus on maintaining an organized workspace and supporting efficient shipping and receiving operations. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Rockford, IL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $25.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
