JOB SUMMARY
The Handyworker is responsible for performing minor home repairs and safety modifications for eligible seniors and other qualified residents through the Handyworker Program. This position conducts home assessments, develops repair estimates, purchases materials, completes approved repairs, and maintains documentation required by grant and program guidelines. The Handyworker plays a critical role in helping community members maintain safe, accessible, and independent living environments.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Home Assessments and Repairs Conduct in-home assessments to identify repair and safety needs. Evaluate repair requests for program eligibility and feasibility. Perform minor home repairs and modifications, including but not limited to: Installation of grab bars Minor plumbing repairs Screen repairs and replacement Door and lock repairs Minor carpentry work Accessibility and safety improvements Ensure repairs are completed safely, professionally, and in accordance with program standards. Project Planning and Documentation Prepare accurate material lists and cost estimates for approved repairs. Purchase materials and maintain documentation of all expenditures. Submit receipts and supporting documentation in accordance with organizational and grant requirements. Maintain detailed records of assessments, completed repairs, and participant signatures. Complete service reports and other required program documentation in a timely manner. Program Compliance and Customer Service Meet program productivity standards and grant deliverables. Educate participants regarding available services and home safety practices. Maintain positive and professional relationships with program participants, vendors, and community partners. Follow all AVPH safety policies and procedures while performing work in the field. Attend required staff meetings, trainings, and professional development activities. Other Duties Attend required staff meetings and training sessions Support departmental and agency-wide initiatives Perform other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Knowledge of basic residential repair and maintenance practices. Ability to safely operate hand and power tools. Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills. Ability to accurately estimate repair costs and material needs. Strong organizational and documentation skills. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Customer service skills and ability to interact respectfully with diverse populations. Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office and electronic recordkeeping systems.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
Local travel within the Antelope Valley region is required to support community partnerships, meetings, and outreach activities. Occasional travel to off-site trainings, partner meetings, or agency events may be required. Mileage reimbursement will be provided in accordance with AVPH policy.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework in Social Work, Public Health, Psychology, Child Development, or related field preferred At least one (2) year of experience working with children, families, or community-based services preferred Knowledge of basic residential repair and maintenance practices. Ability to safely operate hand and power tools. Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills. Ability to accurately estimate repair costs and material needs. Strong organizational and documentation skills. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Customer service skills and ability to interact respectfully with diverse populations. Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office and electronic recordkeeping systems. Valid California Driver's License. Current automobile insurance meeting California minimum requirements. Successful completion of background screening. TB clearance as required by program regulations
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, reach, and perform repetitive motions. Regularly lift, carry, push, and pull materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Ability to use hand and power tools safely. Ability to enter and work within residential environments that may include stairs and confined spaces. Working Conditions Combination of field and office work. Frequent travel throughout the Antelope Valley service area. Exposure to varying weather conditions while conducting field visits. Work may involve entering occupied residences and interacting with participants in diverse living situations. Occasional work under time-sensitive conditions to meet program deadlines and grant requirements
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
This position is grant-funded and contingent upon continued funding and program needs. Must maintain regular and punctual attendance in accordance with agency standards. Must comply with all AVPH policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements. Job duties may be modified to remain compliant with programmatic or grant-related changes.
