BJRC Summer Intern

Bridgeport (CT) Juvenile Residential Center Summer Enrichment Program Intern Position Overview The BJRC Summer Enrichment Program Intern will work at the Bridgeport Juvenile Residential Center for a 6-week program aimed to help young people ages 12-17 to improve their educational, social & emotional skills. The Intern will work under the direction of the Site Coordinator, and partner with certified teachers to help provide age-appropriate, gender and trauma-sensitive curriculum with an intensive focus on remediation in math, reading and writing. This opportunity presents interns with the chance to explore potential interest in the fields of education or social work, as they receive training in behavior management and work on a variety of different tasks to ensure the program runs smoothly.

Essential Responsibilities:

Classroom Instruction & Support Support classroom instruction as directed by the site coordinator and lead teachers Instruct students individually or in small groups Use trauma-informed methodologies to help manage student behavior issues in the classroom Follow the security and safety protocols of the Bridgeport Juvenile Residential Center Support the site coordinator and teachers with administrative tasks

Qualifications High school diploma Interest in helping students achieve academic success Willingness to build relationships with young people Commitment to the Domus mission, values and core principles. Flexibility and adaptability, able to shift styles to fit the needs of a wide range of cultures, people and organizations

Skills Required:

A strong work ethic Proficient math, writing and/or reading skills, with the ability to support students ages 12-17 in high-school level curriculum Ability to motivate students who may have been unsuccessful in traditional school environments

Preferred:

Bachelor's degree, or currently enrolled in post-secondary education Fluent in Spanish Familiarity with the Sanctuary model of trauma-informed care and Cornell University's Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI)

This is a temporary, 6-week, 6-hour/day, non-exempt position, which is not eligible for benefits. Interns will earn $22/hour for all hours of instruction, training and required meetings.
