Job Description

Position Summary The part-time Executive Director provides overall leadership and management of Pegasus Special Rider's nonprofit equine‑assisted therapeutic programs, ensuring safe, ethical, and high‑quality services for participants while advancing the organization's mission. This role oversees program operations, equine welfare, staff and volunteer management, compliance, community engagement, and works closely with the Board of Directors and key stakeholders. Key Responsibilities Program Leadership & Oversight Oversee all equine-assisted activities and therapeutic programs Ensure programs align with best practices, industry standards, and the organization's mission Monitor program effectiveness, participant outcomes, and continuous quality improvement Equine Care & Facility Management Ensure the health, safety, and humane treatment of all equines Oversee equine selection, conditioning, veterinary care, farrier services, nutrition, and retirement planning Maintain safe and accessible facilities, arenas, barns, and equipment Develop and enforce safety protocols for participants, staff, volunteers, and horses Staff & Volunteer Management Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate staff and volunteers Foster a positive, inclusive, and mission‑driven organizational culture Ensure appropriate certifications, training, and continuing education requirements are met Promote clear communication, teamwork, and professional development Compliance & Risk Management Ensure compliance with applicable nonprofit, safety, insurance, and program standards Maintain accurate records related to participants, equines, staff, and volunteers Develop and enforce policies related to risk management, emergency procedures, and participant safety Financial & Administrative Responsibilities Assist with budget development and manage program‑related expenses Support grant writing, reporting, program documentation, and data collection Oversee scheduling, enrollment, and program logistics Work with Board and leadership on long‑term sustainability planning Fundraising & Community Relations Support fundraising activities, donor engagement, and special events Represent the organization to community partners, referral sources, and the public Build relationships with schools, healthcare providers, and social service agencies Serve as an advocate for equine‑assisted services and participants
Qualifications Required:
Experience with nonprofit management, human services, education, or a related field Demonstrated experience in equine‑assisted activities or therapeutic riding programs Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills Knowledge of horse care, barn management, and safety practices Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings or weekends
Preferred:
Certification through PATH International programs or a recognized equine‑assisted or therapeutic riding organization Experience in nonprofit administration, budgeting, or fundraising Experience working with individuals with disabilities, mental health needs, or trauma‑informed programs Grant management, writing, or reporting experience Core Competencies Mission‑driven leadership Equine welfare and safety expertise Program development and oversight Staff and volunteer supervision Risk management and ethical decision‑making Community engagement and advocacy Physical & Work Requirements Ability to work in a barn and outdoor environment Ability to lift and carry equipment and perform light to moderate physical labor Ability to work around horses safely and confidently Compensation & Benefits Compensation is commensurate with experience.
Pay:
$25,000.00 - $40,000.00 per year
