  • Summer Youth Employment Program General Description The Intern Coordinator will work directly with the Education Specialist.
The Intern Coordinator will support and co-facilitate a Summer Youth Employment Program. The intern coordinator will work with the education specialist to prepare materials and content and assist in supporting a cohort of teen interns. The intern coordinator will assist with the introduction of careers in outdoor recreation and natural resources with a focus on careers with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Additionally, the intern coordinator will assist in the facilitation of opportunities to participate in outdoor recreation and job readiness training for the program participants. The Intern Coordinator will support the principles of the Detroit Zoological Society. The Intern Coordinator will maintain a professional manner when dealing with all constituencies and always preserve a high level of integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality. Principle Duties & Responsibilities Report to the Belle Isle Nature Center or the Detroit Zoo for duties Lead engaging nature-related activities for interns Supervising interns Participate in data collection and evaluation of the program Develop trusting relationships and work closely with interns Attend and participate in scheduled on and off-site workshops and field trips Operate and utilize outdoor equipment and work tools Generate weekly reports and records Other duties as assigned by the program coordinators Requirements Must be 19+ years of age Must have a high school diploma or equivalent Must have a valid driver's license Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Experience creating, developing, preparing, and delivering programming for youth Teaching Experience or experience working with children in a non-traditional setting Degree (or pursuing a degree) in a field pertaining to the environment, agriculture, science, wildlife, education, or youth development. Preferred, but not required Ability to work indoors and outdoors under variable weather conditions and terrain Outdoor recreation skills and experience (canoeing/kayaking, hiking, camping). Preferred, but not required Ability to work effectively and productively as part of a team Self-motivated, organized, attentive to details, and has effective time management skills Ability to interact positively and professionally at all times Passion for the outdoors, enthusiasm for working with people Excellent communication skills Enthusiasm for talking to individuals of all ages in a positive, professional manner Must have a team-focused attitude, flexible mindset, and dependability Willingness to learn new skills and share knowledge with others Working Conditions Work is conducted both inside and outside and may include work in adverse weather with the outside environment, heights, and exposures. The position involves exposure to all types of weather, air conditioning, and heating systems. The Environmental Intern Coordinator may be required to walk long distances around Belle Isle State Park and other locations. The regular work schedule may include weekends and holidays. Physical Requirements Physical work is part of the job and includes walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, and bending for long periods of time; must be able to lift at least 20 pounds. The individual must have the ability to perform essential functions of the job satisfactorily.
