Key Responsibilities:
Assists in establishing peer counseling program protocols and policies in accordance with WIC state and federal guidelines as well as CHS of NJ's policies and procedures. Arranges for training of peer counselors and monitors their caseloads. Assist in the coordination of special events, such as the national breastfeeding week, nutrition day, wellness health fair and other events to promote WIC services among community residents. Assists in establishing program goals and objectives that meet the state's expected outcomes as outlined in the yearly grant submission. Attends all required meetings at the local, state, and/or federal level in representation of the WIC Mercer Program. Collects documentation records and data as appropriate and follows up with staff and clients as needed to achieve program goals. Communicates monthly meetings with peer counselors, plans unit meetings with staff and assists with WIC administrative meetings in collaboration with the WIC Program Administrator and Nutrition Supervisor. Determines peer counselor staffing needs and schedules, approves time sheets and provides coverage as needed. Develops lesson plans and handouts to support breastfeeding activities at the WIC office. Evaluates performance of Peer Counselors, volunteers and/or interns on a yearly basis. Monitors budget, places orders and makes recommendations in collaboration with the WIC management team. Monitors the program, including conducting internal monitoring of staff. Networks with community agencies and interested parties in establishing linkages in the development of BF services. Provide counseling to prenatal and breastfeeding participants and their families. Provides ongoing supervision following the Supervision for Success Model. Provides periodic in-service training for all staff, including clerks, nutritionists, student interns and volunteers to support breastfeeding efforts on site. Recruits and interviews potential peer counselors in alignment with program policies and standards. Reviews and orders breastfeeding videos, literature and materials from state distribution center. Revises the program's breastfeeding manual annually and as needed. Updates and revises local agency policies and procedures on breastfeeding as needed. Routinely reports on the program to WIC Director and/or State Breastfeeding Coordinator. Works collaboratively with the local departments of health within the county as well as with local hospitals in the implementation of special outreach, education and/or implementation programs. Works collaboratively with the WIC management team to assess ongoing improvements to the program that may be needed.
Qualifications:
Credentialed as an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) required. Bachelor's degree preferred. Has demonstrated experience in program management. Has demonstrated expertise in breastfeeding management and promotion. Has a minimum of 3 years' experience counseling breastfeeding women. Bilingual English/Spanish preferred. Training Receives State-approved training in breastfeeding management. Participates in continuing education about breastfeeding annually.
