NUTRITION/BREASTFEEDING COORDINATOR
FT/PART-TIME EXEMPT

SALARY:
$28.44 GENERAL
DEFINITION
The primary responsibility of this position will be to plan, organize, and develop a nutrition curriculum for implementation and evaluation. Performs work related to all aspects of nutrition services delivery to the Zuni WIC Program. Is responsible for staff and client education.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Work is performed under the general supervision of the WIC Director.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Supervises the Assistant Nutrition/Breastfeeding Coordinator.
DUTIES:
Coordinate nutrition education/services to WIC clients.
  • Plans, develops, implements, and evaluates nutrition education plan for the Zuni WIC program, including training classes and sessions.
  • Facilitates monthly nutrition curriculum development meetings with local nutrition and health professionals.
  • Performs an annual needs assessment for nutrition and breastfeeding education for both staff and program participants.
  • Plans, conducts, and evaluates dietary studies.
  • Participates in nutritional and epidemiological studies with the nutritional component.
  • Develops and evaluates the State's overall WIC breastfeeding service plan.
  • Instructs clients and their families in nutritional principles, dietary plans, food selection, and food preparation. Develops and implements nutritional care plans for participants based on assessment of nutritional needs and available sources and resources.
  • Correlates plan with other health care providers when necessary.
  • Provides follow-up care as needed for high-risk participants.
  • Maintains an appointment system for certification clinics, high risk counseling clinics, and such.
  • Provides consultation to and works in collaboration with tribal and community groups and other health care personnel as the representative of the WIC Program.
  • Conducts or participates in in-service education and consultation with professional staff and support personnel within the same or related professions. Coordinate breastfeeding promotion, education, and support activities.
  • Identifies breastfeeding promotion and support services needed in the state to develop program objectives and goals.
  • Coordinates State breastfeeding promotion and support activities with other internal and external agencies/programs and coordinate efforts according to the State Plan.
  • Ensures that all State and local agency staff receive competency-based training on breastfeeding promotion and support.
  • Keeps current with up-to-date nutrition and breastfeeding information and disseminates this as well as FNS-provided information to other State and Local agency staff.
  • Develops State policies, procedures and/or guidelines for breastfeeding promotion and support.
  • Monitors State breastfeeding initiation and duration rates.
  • Evaluates State breastfeeding promotion and support activities.
  • Provides input on breastfeeding promotion and support expenditures as part of the State Nutrition Services and Administrative budget.
  • Identifies or develops appropriate breastfeeding education resources and materials.
  • follow up of all clients and adherence to all program policies and procedures related to breastfeeding.
  • Identifies methods/strategies that will be used to promote and support breastfeeding. Provides general nutrition education to individuals and groups, adapting teaching plans to the needs of clients.
  • Performs assessment of nutrition education for clients.
  • Designs and completes the nutrition education curriculum for the program.
  • Identifies existing nutrition education materials appropriate for use in food demonstrations.
  • Develops material that is culturally appropriate to Zuni.
  • Plans and organizes nutrition education workshops for clients.
  • Develop educational materials, (i.e pamphlets, bulletin boards, posters etc.)
  • Provide food demonstrations, individual and group nutrition education sessions.
  • Follow up with all clients and adhere to all program policies and procedures relating to nutrition services delivery.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Must have knowledge of human nutrition and its relationship to health and disease. Must have knowledge in food science and research methods applied to public health nutrition. Must be knowledgeable about the public health approach to program development and evaluation. Must have knowledge of community resources. Must be familiar with principles of management and supervision. Ability to provide supervision, direction, and assistance to staff. Must be sensitive to the economic, social, and cultural environment of the population served. Ability to promote and develop nutrition aspects of related public health programs. Ability to analyze and evaluate nutrition research and data. Ability to coordinate with other programs. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with community members, clients, and program staff.
TRAINING & EXPERIENCE
Master's Degree in Public Health or Nutrition with three years of related work experience in the nutrition field. OR Bachelors Degree from an accredited college/university in Food Science, Nutrition, Dietetics, or Home Economics, with a minimum of nine (9) semester hours in Food Science and Nutrition courses, with five (5) years of related work experience in the nutrition field.
LICENSE & CERTIFICATES
Must be a Registered Dietician with the American Dietetic Assn. (or RD eligible) OR a License Nutritionist (LN) or Licensed Dietician (LD) in the State of New Mexico. Must possess a valid New Mexico Driver's license with no DWI/DUI convictions within the past three (3) years. Driving is an essential part of the duties.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking, standing, bending, carrying of light items, driving an automobile, etc. No special physical demands are required to perform the work. Regular exposure to favorable conditions such as those found in a normal office.
SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS
Position is subject to Pre-Employment drug test. The position is Safety Sensitive and will be subject to random drug screening for duration of employment, in compliance with the Pueblo of Zuni Drug Free Workplace Policy.   • Daily records are kept in a hardbound book.
  • Records all required contract submittals.
  • Observes the installation of temporary erosion control devices and temporary traffic control devices.
  • All bridge construction activities will require the same information recordation.
  • Make recommendations for changes or relocations of items that benefit a positive outcome of any construction work, which poses no apparent funding increase to the overall contract amount.
  • Coordinates and inspects manufactured items and/or materials that meet the Buy America requirements, such as pre-cast concrete products. Records certificate of compliance on materials requiring such documentations.
  • Ensures that corrective actions are resolved on non-compliance contract work before contractor under takes new tasks.
  • Inspects and ensures that contract specifications and requirements are met or have complied with.
  • Address any design or construction issues and propose solutions and report challenges.
  • Contact contractors or their representatives in attempts to resolve differences of opinions; interpretations of plans and specifications; ensure quality workmanship; coordination of changes and progress of work.
  • Report to Civil Engineer on the progress of the project. Surveying and data collection. Practical application of engineering science and testing procedures for contract compliance.
  • Perform calculations and technical tasks using engineering software.
  • Observes field tests conducted by third party for contract specification compliance.
  • Ensures that all sampling and testing requirements meet or exceed the contract design plans and specifications that meet the Federal and/or State requirements.
  • Monitors the testing procedures by the independent testing or geotechnical laboratories in order that compliance is met either with American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) or American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) requirements.
  • Read and interpret engineering design drawings and other pertinent plans and specifications.
  • Maintain project diaries and other construction reporting documents.
  • May occasional use field survey instruments and computer software for departmental records.
  • Ensure that engineering projects adhere to safety and environmental regulations.
  • Identify potential hazards, assess environmental impacts, and propose mitigation measures.
  • Interpretation and placement of temporary traffic control devices utilizing the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) handbook. Technical Support. Performs other technical engineering.
  • Update road inventory, minor drafting or record keeping for quantities and contract as-built for closeouts.
  • Assign or assist in the daily or weekly scheduling of road maintenance activities for the road maintenance staff.
  • Confers with the supervisor to determine project details and to future road project priority listings, which is identified as Tribal Transportation Improvement Projects (TTIPs).
  • Prepare documentation to update existing roads or list new roads into the National Tribal Transportation Facility Inventory (NTTFI). Field reconnaissance may be necessary for road inventory accuracy.
