Full Job Description Detroit Youth Organizer Job Description:
Student Advocacy Center of Michigan, an education justice advocacy organization, is seeking a Youth Organizer who is passionate about working with Detroit youth to create concrete change in their schools. We are seeking an individual that is committed to community organizing as a tool for change, elevating youth voice, building youth power and leadership, collaborating with schools and other community agencies, promoting school stability and success for youth who may be marginalized in the education system. This position will engage in important work to challenge school practices that lead to juvenile justice involvement and address harmful school funding inequities. We want to listen to students' voices, challenge the harmful practices in individual cases, craft specific asks for changes in collaboration with students, and activate our networks to show up and demand change at school board meetings and with the state legislature.

Steps you would take to engage youth in organizing work?
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED 1 year experience in organizing Experience working with youth Knowledge of education policy issues, such as the school-to-prison-pipeline, school funding, etc. Knowledge of the Detroit community Serve as a positive role model to students, staff, and parents. Ability to communicate and maintain trusting relationships with communities, partners and other educational authorities Excellent interpersonal, teamwork, collaboration, and communication skills Highly organized, detail oriented, flexible and able to build strong relationships Experience with Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Docs required. Experience with Canva and Social Media management preferred Background check clearance, including ICHAT, national and state sex offender registry and Central Registry clearance A valid Michigan driver's license, reliable vehicle, driver's record clearance and proof of insurance that meets SAC's underwriting criteria Scope of services:
Organizing and Power Building:
Assist with recruitment of youth from current and past SAC youth, working with SAC staff, to attend group meetings through one on one meetings and pushing in to client meetings in collaboration with SAC staff. Assist with recruitment of non-SAC youth, working with SAC youth, community partners, and schools through tabling events, public presentations, door to door canvassing, one on one meetings, etc. Facilitate Youth Action Michigan meetings / event debrief meetings in collaboration with the Detroit Youth Organizer and supervisors in ways that build relationships, teach and move the work forward strategically. Engage youth in developing safe and brave meeting spaces that meet their needs (i.e. homework help, etc.). Support youth to reflect on their work, consider campaign goals and ways to improve. Develop and facilitate interactive lessons that teach about the organizing cycle, the school to prison pipeline, school funding, and other topics identified by youth. Develop and oversee implementation and updates of Youth Action Michigan strategy chart, ensuring connection to SAC discipline strategy chart. Support youth in surveying their peers, holding listening sessions and conducting research to craft their specific demands. Oversee power mapping and engagement of decision makers. This will include inviting legislators and/or school officials to meetings. Co-create and support strategic actions that will help youth realize concrete changes in their schools, including townhalls, advocacy days, call-in days, public comment, petitions. This includes supporting logistics such as writing scripts, organizing transportation, securing permission forms, etc. Ask questions to encourage youth to process and develop their own ideas (e.g. restorative questions, motivational interviewing, open-ended questions). Help youth connect in meaningful ways to youth in other chapters and community organizations.. Assist youth leaders in developing their leadership skills by supporting their progression through the leadership ladder (supporters to members, and members to leaders). Meet weekly with youth leaders to prepare an agenda for larger meetings. Participate in, lead, or co-lead ongoing weekly debrief meetings.
Community Collaboration:
Work collaboratively with schools and community partners. Serve as an advocate and liaison to other adults when needed, particularly advocating for authentic youth decision-making. Participate in 482Forward 4th Tuesday Organizing Trainings Connect youth to our existing campaigns with 482Forward, and Dignity In Schools Campaign.
Individual Youth Support:
Provide linkages to appropriate community services and resources, such as tutoring, food banks, SAC Helpline, employment opportunities, etc. Monitor school attendance and academic data for participating youth and in collaboration with your supervisor and/or the other Detroit Youth Organizer, design personalized interventions for participating students. Connect with youth leaders throughout the week to provide academic and social support, as well as support with organizing tasks. Keep careful documentation, with youth and the other Detroit Youth Organizer assistance, on attendance of school. Engaging the parent/caregivers/guardian in the youth's education, with Monthly Face to Face Contact w/ Parents/Caregivers/Guardians. Conduct home visits as needed and provide transportation in collaboration with the other Youth Organizer, when applicable. Maintain documentation, including emergency contact information, permission to transport forms, etc. Other duties as assigned may include but are not limited to: Help develop structures to support effective group processing, accessibility, planning and implementation. Work with youth leaders to arrange and plan guest speakers, field trips, etc. Work with other Youth Organizers, interns, and staff to secure meeting snacks and supplies. Work with youth to assess and plan leadership training needs. Collaborate with the other Detroit Youth Organizer to co-facilitate meetings as assigned and build relationships with youth and school personnel. Attend monthly team meetings to reflect on youth organizing strategies for implementation. Attend and participate in weekly supervision meetings.
