Job Description

Please note that this is an in-person role working in a safety and sanitation focused, guest-engagement environment. While some remote work may be possible, persons selected for this position must be willing and able to work in an in-person public environment. Michigan Science Center's Educators excite audiences through electrifying live Science Stage demonstrations, STEM-focused workshops and classes, and by providing children and families with a warm welcome to a world of possibility by engaging in our exhibit galleries. Michigan Science Center inspires curious minds of all ages every year through STEM discovery and interactive education. We are seeking a passionate, flexible, and people-oriented candidate to join our Education team who will assist in bringing playful experiences to audiences of all ages. Job Overview The Museum Educator will engage individuals and groups with classes, demonstrations, activities, and experiences around a variety of STEM topics. Educators regularly facilitate live experiences onsite at the Michigan Science Center in Midtown Detroit, offsite through the Traveling Science program, as well as for online/virtual audiences. Responsibilities and Duties Provide high energy, entertaining, educational, and FUN science programming to a wide variety of audiences Engage with audiences of all ages in the museum, at off-site events, and in virtual settings with experiences and interactions that spark curiosity and a better understanding of our world through STE(A)M Guide visitor and student exploration in STE(A)M through playful learning experiences Execute processes and procedures in daily opening/closing, activities' prep, program facilitation, and exhibit upkeep Assist in evaluating all programs and performances by utilizing surveys and recommending areas of improvement Participate in training led by Michigan Science Center managers and leaders, as well as external professional development opportunities Qualifications and Educational Requirements Knowledgeable OR curious about physical sciences, life sciences, space sciences, engineering and/or technology Confidence in presenting public programs for large and small groups, as well as one-on-one interactions Comfortable using videoconferencing equipment and software (Zoom, Google Meet, Cisco Webex) Must be able to learn new information (STE(A)M-based/relevant) in a short amount of time and present to others with accuracy Must be comfortable and capable working with audiences of diverse age, gender, socio-economic and ethnic background Must not have legal restrictions on working with children Ability to thrive in a dynamic environment Ability to bend, lift up to 50 pounds, stand for extended periods, and have sufficient manual dexterity to operate equipment. Legally authorized to operate a motor vehicle in accordance with State of Michigan requirements & successful completion of motor vehicle operator background check. Preferred Skills and Experiences STE(A)M degree (in-progress or completed) or strong content knowledge within a science field Experience facilitating hands-on activities or live presentations Experience working with children Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills Arabic and/or Spanish conversational proficiency Ability to work independently and in a team environment Benefits Complimentary family membership to the Michigan Science Center Participation in 401k retirement plan after the orientation period (subject to eligibility) Discounts at the Science Store gift shop Parking reimbursement Direct deposit or pay card Transform lives of children and communities through STEM Please provide a cover letter in addition to your resume.
