education curriculum Teaching science Teaching Entry level Full Job Description The AmeriCorps STEM Specialist will assist with hands-on, informal STEM education and will also help with summer activities at the Boys & Girls Club. There are 3 positions available.
Schedule:
The AmeriCorps STEM Specialist will spend about 25-35 hours each week assisting with hands-on, informal STEM education and will also help with summer activities at the Boys & Girls Club. The schedule is approximately Monday through Friday from 11:30 AM to 6:30 PM from mid of May to early August. Training & planning begins May 18 with summer programming running from June 1 - July 31, excluding June 19th, July 3 & July 24. The individual selected for this position will serve as an AmeriCorps member. AmeriCorps is a national service opportunity, not just a regular job. This is a wonderful opportunity to add service and hands-on teaching experience to your resume! This is an especially terrific opportunity for someone who is pursuing an education or STEM-related career. AmeriCorps members sign an agreement to complete a term of service. You will be expected to complete a minimum of 300 service hours throughout your term. This position will provide a living allowance of $4,800 paid over the term of service. The $4,800 stipend will be split up and paid on a bi-weekly basis (every other week) basis during your term of service.
NOTE:
You will not be paid hourly. In addition, an Education Award of $1,565.08 will be awarded upon successful completion. The Segal AmeriCorps Education Award is a post-service benefit received by individuals who complete terms of national service in approved AmeriCorps programs. This award (similar to a Pell Grant) can be used to repay qualified student loans and to pay current educational expenses at eligible institutions.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide STEM education: Lead STEM lessons during the time allocated each week Maintain records of lesson plans and track data for the number of students served Complete weekly timesheets and a monthly report Evaluate progress of youth served using surveys & rubrics Create an environment that facilitates the achievement of
Youth Development Outcomes:
Build positive relationships with youth, families, school staff, and your teammates; Promote and stimulate program participation; Provide guidance and role modeling to members; Ensure members are encouraged to participate in a variety of program areas/activities and receive instruction and constructive feedback to develop skills in program area(s). Demonstrate leadership to assure conduct, safety, and development of members. Program Development and Implementation Effectively implement and administer programs, services, and activities for all members and visitors. Monitor and evaluate program services and activities. Oversee member safety, program quality, and appearance of the organization at all times. Supervision Supervise and ensure safety during indoor and outdoor activities (rain or shine). Ensure a productive work environment by participating in weekly organization staff meetings.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
May participate in special programs and/or events. Participate in weekly staff meetings and all grant required training.
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED
18+ years of age. United States citizen or legal permanent resident. High school diploma or GED. Meet the requirements set by the Corporation for National and Community Service. Experience in working with children. Knowledge of youth development. Motivated youth and manage behavior problems. Ability to work with the school and general public. Plan and implement quality programs for youth. Organize and supervise members in a safe environment. CPR and First Aid Certifications may be required. Valid State Driver's License Preference will be given to individuals with educational or work experience related to science, technology, engineering, math, teaching, and/or education.
