This 10-week, full-time service opportunity is designed for individuals who are passionate about making a difference while building valuable professional skills in program coordination, volunteer management, and community engagement.
Program Description:
The Summer Learning Program helps prevent summer learning loss for children in Utah County. Research shows that while children from all backgrounds tend to progress similarly during the school year, many students from lower-income households fall behind academically over the summer months. This program plays an important role in supporting children by strengthening both academic skills and social-emotional development in a safe and engaging environment. The program will run for four consecutive weeks in July 2026 and will serve children who have completed grades 2-6.
Program activities include:
Reading Support STEM learning Art therapy Outdoor recreation Daily free healthy lunch and snacks
Field Trips Position Description and Responsibilities:
The Summer Learning VISTA Coordinators will lead and support the Payson Summer Learning Program. Coordinators will oversee daily program operations and supervise volunteers, children, and participating parents. This role offers valuable experience in program management, youth development, volunteer coordination, and nonprofit leadership. The two Payson Summer Learning VISTA coordinators will plan the following: 1. Program Planning and Coordination Thanksgiving Point class: Collaborate with Thanksgiving Point Educational Program to manage the time, classes, and volunteers this institution provides.
Reading Club/Art Therapy Class:
Recruit volunteers to lead art therapy activities Support volunteers in developing and organizing curriculum Outdoor activities: Coordinate volunteers supervising recess and outdoor games Prepare fun structured activities for outdoor play Provide indoor activities for children who prefer to remain inside 2. Volunteer Recruitment and Management Because the Payson Summer Learning Program is volunteer-based, coordinators will: Recruit, train, and manage volunteers Coordinate partners such as Thanksgiving Point Support volunteers assisting with Reading Club, Art Therapy, and outdoor activities Ensure volunteers feel supported and prepared 3. Parent Engagement Coordinators will work closely with families to ensure a supportive learning environment by: Reviewing program registrations with the Center Coordinator Notifying families of program acceptance Organizing a Meet and Greet for parents and volunteers Delivering a mandatory parent orientation Encouraging parent volunteer participation throughout the program Keeping the center clean: Oversee and work as a team and involve parents to volunteer to clean up the center and prepare for the next day of summer learning. Clean up every day to prepare for each day and new week.
Daily Operations:
Help prepare the center prior to program start Organize classrooms and supplies Maintain and work as a team and involve parents to volunteer in daily cleanup Restore the center after the program concludes
Food Distribution:
Obtain a Food Handler Permit before the program begins Oversee daily lunch and snack distribution Ensure food reporting requirements are submitted to the Boys and Girls Club Follow federal policies regarding food sharing
Field Trips and Events:
Collaborate with the Center Coordinator to confirm field trip details Support field trips planned by the South Franklin and American Fork centers Assist in organizing the summer carnival with coordinators from all centers
Data Collection and Reporting:
Track daily attendance Record food distribution data Collect teacher feedback and assessment data Gather photos and help prepare a program summary report
Behavior Support:
When there are behavioral issues with a child arise, coordinators will: Work one-on-one with students to support positive behavior Help children develop solutions and action plans Collaborate with parents when additional support is needed Work with program staff to determine appropriate next steps if challenges continue
Qualifications:
Minimum Requirements:
  • Spanish speaking preferable
  • Passion to help families and children
  • Experience working with children (preferred)
  • Leadership experience (preferred)
  • Teaching experience (preferred)
  • Ability to participate in collaborative teamwork among staff, interns and other volunteers
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Willing to take initiatives on projects
  • Must be at least 18 years old and graduated from high school
  • Great organizational skills and attention to detail
Benefits and Compensation:
$2,000 per month living allowance
Choice of:
 Segal AmeriCorps Education Award - $1,565 (for repaying qualified student loans and paying current educational expenses at eligible institutions), OR  $345 end-of-term cash stipend Position based at Payson Community Center.
Hours:
Monday through Friday 9:00 am - 5:30 pm; occasional schedule adjustments may occur.
