Job Description
The City of Olympia's Water Resources Division within the Public Works Department seeks an intern to assist with their Education and Outreach efforts. Water Resources is involved in many types of public education and outreach, including efforts to reduce or eliminate nonpoint pollution. Potential non-point pollution sources include nutrient and pesticide runoff, pet waste, sediment runoff, and automotive-related pollutants. The City of Olympia is seeking an intern to provide administrative and organizational support to the Utility's stormwater education and outreach programs. The intern will assist the Senior Stormwater Outreach Specialist with a wide variety of stormwater-related programs. Learning Objectives Gain experience working for a Water Resource utility on public involvement and education programs. Develop technical and plain-talk writing skills within a municipal utility setting. Obtain hands-on experience in developing and implementing stormwater outreach/education materials into print, video, and social media. Gain experience assisting with educational workshops and other community events. Gain experience with City branding and accessibility design standards for educational materials. Gain an understanding of community-based social marketing. Job Responsibilities Working with the Senior Stormwater Outreach Specialist, the intern will support activities such as: Adopt-A-Drain Behavior Change Program Data input and management. GIS analysis and support. Email and phone correspondence with program participants. Support Latinx Community Ambassador Program. Conduct community outreach, including tabling events and other forms of engagement. Develop social media content. Regional Environmental Education Program (REEP) Provide support for Stream Team work plan events, programs, and activities as needed. Assist with Stream Team administrative duties as needed. Attend Stream Team monthly meetings. Support the redevelopment of the Stream Team website. Support the distribution and tracking of Stream Team Newsletters. Water Resources Utility Programs Support the redevelopment of Stormwater Pollution Prevention web pages. Develop social media content. Assist ongoing programs, including Pet Waste, Natural Yard Care, Storm Drain Marking, and Stormwater Middle School Week. Conduct information gathering surveys. Prepare outreach materials. Data input and management. Prepare PowerPoint presentations. Assist with event planning and implementation. Assist with photo shoots.
Knowledge and Experience Qualifications:
Strong computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Acrobat Pro, and GIS). Experience communicating effectively both orally and in writing. Proficient at formatting and proofreading documents and a variety of printed materials. Experience with social marketing tools. Ability to keep organized records. Experience working with the public. Ability to assist with event planning and implementation. Experience working on a staff or project team and establishing effective working relations. Fast learner, able to work independently, multitask and prioritize, complete tasks on time, and produce quality, detail-oriented work. Able to provide exceptional customer service to volunteers, program participants, and the general public. Interest in natural sciences, environmental studies/science, and planning is preferred. Salary and Schedule This summer internship requires that the student be currently enrolled in college coursework. Although offered as a summer internship, there is the potential to extend the internship into the academic year. Work hours are up to 19 per week during school sessions and up to 40 per week during school breaks and summer. Work hours between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. are somewhat flexible. Occasional evening and weekend work is required for events. This position is not eligible to receive benefits such as health insurance, paid vacation, or paid holidays.Similar remote jobs
