Caltrans manages more than 50,000 miles of California's highway and freeway lanes, provides inter-city rail services, permits more than 400 public-use airports and special-use hospital heliports, and works with local agencies. Caltrans carries out its mission of providing a safe, sustainable, integrated, and efficient transportation system to enhance California's economy and livability, with six primary programs: Aeronautics, Highway Transportation, Mass Transportation, Transportation Planning, Administration, and the Equipment Service Center. The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is seeking to hire a student assistant, in a learning capacity, under close supervision by a Senior Transportation Engineer, in a learning capacity, the student assistant will assist project engineers with developing construction contracts, Minor B contracts, and service contracts for highway maintenance projects. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. 16 per hour. Minimum Qualifications Must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA. Must complete each term with minimum unit requirements for Undergraduate and Graduate student classifications. Proof will be collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term. Must have valid CA Driver's License. Preferred Qualifications Under the amendment to Government Code Section 18220, state agencies shall give preference to a qualified applicant (up to 26 years of age) who is, or has been, a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth, a formerly incarcerated youth, or a victim of human trafficking. Duties and Responsibilities In a learning capacity, the student assistant will receive training from departmental staff and gain practical experience by observing and assisting with site inspections for facility condition reports and maintenance design projects within the district. In a learning capacity, the student assistant will assist in and perform calculations and determinations of quantities for a variety of construction items; observes methods, problems and principles related to the departmental assignments. In a learning capacity, the student assistant will assist with engineering studies, research and analysis; gains experience in the methods and ethics of professional conduct and practice. In a learning capacity, the student assistant will assist with drafting plans for environmental studies, functional unit requests, and contract documents under the direction of a licensed civil engineer. Physical Requirements Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation. May be required to lift objects up to 50 pounds and occasional bending, stooping, and climbing. Working Conditions Work is primarily performed in an office environment with about 20% in a field environment. Must be able to drive to remote field sites that are upwards of 4 hours away from the office, move around on uneven surfaces in rugged areas that are near live traffic. Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, and uneven terrain. May require occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, or climbing as part of field duties.
