Associate Teaching Professor Pedro Morales-Almazan with the Monterey Bay Area Mathematics Project (MBAMP) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the MBAMP Director. MBAMP provides professional development for K-12 mathematics teachers across Santa Cruz, Monterey, and San Benito counties. MBAMP serves Region 5B of the California Subject Matter Projects - a statewide effort. Through events such as summer institutes and a community math teacher circle, MBAMP brings together mathematicians, teachers, and administrators. MBAMP events focus on building knowledge of mathematics; improving skills in instruction; enhancing and practicing leadership skills; and assisting in curriculum development. Summary of Duties Working under the supervision of the Monterey Bay Area Math Project Principal Investigator, currently Associate Teaching Professor Pedro Morales-Almazan, the MBAMP Director is responsible for coordinating all MBAMP activities and personnel; providing and directing outreach to regional schools and districts; acquiring funding through public and private sources, especially through California agencies; and supervising staff and mentoring teacher participants. MBAMP Program Coordination The director is responsible for developing and coordinating all of MBAMP's core events. These events include on-going teacher leader institutes and professional development for K-12 teachers. Academic year services include coordination of workshops, colloquium series, and one-day conferences. Further MBAMP services have included focus and peer review groups, classroom observations, and individual and group peer coaching. The director also serves as a liaison between principal investigators from the UCSC math and education faculty and the regional K-12 education community. Additionally, the director also works with the UCSC CalTeach program, which connects current undergraduate students with in-service K-12 teachers and internships. Outreach Outreach includes the coordination of fee-for-service programs; this requires the director to identify schools, develop appropriate professional development, negotiate contracts, and supervise events. Acquisition of Funding The director is responsible for researching and personally writing proposals, working with grant-writers at UCSC, and applying for grants. The director will be responsible for grant activity, compliance, and reporting.Typical funding sources include:
Seed funding from the California Subject Matter Projects, which must be renewed annually. Particular funding opportunities from the State of California targeting CSMPs. Public and private sources related to strengthening K-12 teaching of mathematics, and broader impact funding available to UCSC faculty. Supervision and Mentorship The MBAMP director may supervise personnel including a program coordinator and student interns. In addition, the MBAMP director is expected to recruit and mentor teachers to become teacher-leaders. We strongly encourage applications from candidates that have experience with mentoring teachers, supervising staff, acquiring grants, working with school districts/office of education, and organizing complex events. The hiring unit will not sponsor employment-eligible immigration statuses for this position.Monterey Bay Area Mathematics Project:
