Job Description
Permit Coordinator — Part-Time, Remote Upstate Commercial Services, Inc. | Greenville, SC Prior permitting experience is required for this position. About Us Upstate Commercial Services is a female-owned commercial kitchen ventilation and equipment contractor based in Greenville, SC. Since 1984, we've fabricated and installed hood systems, ductwork, walk-in coolers and freezers, and gas piping for restaurants and commercial kitchens across Upstate South Carolina, Western North Carolina, and North Georgia. About the Role We're hiring a Permit Coordinator to manage mechanical permitting across multiple jurisdictions. This is a fully remote, part-time position starting at 5-10 hours per week, with the potentially more hours for the right person. This is not an entry-level or training position. We are only reviewing applications from candidates with hands-on permitting experience. What You'll Do Prepare and submit mechanical permit applications to city and county building departments Track application status and follow up until permits are issued Communicate with plan reviewers, inspectors, and permitting clerks Coordinate with our office and field teams on submittal documents, drawings, and inspection scheduling Manage permit workflow and job tracking in Trello Maintain organized, current permit records for all active jobs Stay current on jurisdiction-specific requirements across SC, NC, and GA What We're Looking For Prior permitting experience — required. Mechanical or construction permitting strongly preferred. You should already understand how a submittal package comes together and what a plan reviewer is likely to send back. Experience navigating online municipal permitting portals. Every jurisdiction runs a different system, and you'll need to work through them independently. Working knowledge of Trello or comparable project management software Highly tech savvy. This role is entirely online — permitting portals, Trello, email, cloud file storage. You should be comfortable picking up new software without hand-holding. Strong customer service skills. You'll be on the phone and email daily with building departments, general contractors, and our own crews. How you handle those conversations matters as much as the paperwork. Persistence and follow-through. Permits stall when no one is chasing them. Availability during standard weekday business hours Reliable internet and a quiet workspace for phone calls Professional references required — we will check them Compensation $18.50 to $24.00 per hour, depending on experience. We're also open to a flat weekly rate if that structure works better for you — just let us know your preference when you apply. How to Apply Please include a brief note describing your permitting experience, the jurisdictions you've worked in, and at least two professional references.
