Description The Associate Dean of Students and Director of Residential Life is a year round (46 weeks) administrative faculty position primarily responsible for the tone and quality of residential life. Consults and collaborates with the Dean of Students regarding all aspects of student discipline, and the cultivating of student morale, spirit, traditions and standards.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Associate Dean of Students/Director of Residential Life Collaborates with the Dean of Students and other appropriate colleagues to consider, plan and implement strategic priorities that support optimal advising and support systems for all Choate students. Participates in long term planning for residential life. Oversees opening days of school in dorms. Participates in the training of new faculty during their orientation Plans and runs the Choate Leadership Institute Oversees the prefect program Coordinates the Student Leadership Application Process Oversees the Housing Process for new and returning students Serves on the Trustee Committee on Student Life Coordinate requests for accommodations, including, facilities, Health Services and advisers Distributes and monitors fire safety inspection form for each dorm Oversees and works with Heads of House to ensure dorms are running well meeting with them frequently throughout the year. Collaborates with the Director of Day Students to plan and implement the student feedback forms of House Mentors and Student Life Advisers Evaluates first and second year faculty advisers and house mentors for the Dean of Faculty's Office Interviews faculty candidates interested in Choate Participates in Enrollment Committee meetings establishing enrollment targets each year Participates in Sustainability Committee meetings Oversees REACH computer application for Dean's Office and House Mentor teams Works with the Dean of Faculty and Dean of Students to assign faculty members to dorms as house mentors, adjuncts, associates and weekend relief. Coordinates sabbatical and parental leave coverage for house mentors and advisory groups. Oversees student key card access to dorms. Serves as a liaison to Facilities Services and helps review summer projects and dorm furniture needs. Oversees Advising, Choate Leadership Institute, and Residential Life budgets Oversees required adviser communication to parents and guardians at predetermined times. Serves on a panel for Spring Visits, Family Weekend, and Opening Days Oversees relief duty team to help cover dorm and advising duties when needed Carries out weeknight and weekend Dean on Duty coverage Assigns students to faculty advisers for advisory groups. Reviews and updates the Student Life Advising Guide Book regularly Assists the Dean of Students with Student Handbook updates Facilitates professional development for residential life Serves on the Form Deans Group and attends weekly Deans Meetings As administrative faculty member Teach no more than one course per term Serve as caring and responsive adviser to a group of students Contribute to the co-curricular life of the school in accordance with personal expertise and school needs Supervise students in residential houses as assigned or take on other student supervisory duties Engage in ongoing professional growth and development as directed by supervisorsSECONDARY DUTIES
Assumes the responsibilities of the Dean of Students in the person's absence or in cases when the Dean of Students faces a conflict of interest. Other duties as assigned by theHead of Student and Academic Life or Dean of Students Requirements Education:
Bachelor's degree.Prior experience:
At least five years experience in a residential educational setting. At least three years of experience as an administrator in a school environment strongly recommended.Other Key Competencies:
