Job Description
Summary:
- The Director, System Security and Public Safety is responsible for the strategic oversight and leadership of the organization's security functions, including physical security, workplace violence prevention and response, regulatory compliance, and—when applicable— coordination with cyber security resources.
Job Responsibilities:
- + Leads, mentors and coaches subordinate managers and supervisors, to ensure effective systems and processes are in place for staff planning, talent acquisition, engagement, retention, performance & conflict management, and professional development.
Emphasizes elements of operational excellence:
the achievement of high value (high quality at low cost), extraordinary service and cultivation of highly effective teams. Promotes and supports a Culture of Safety throughout Baystate Health, serving as a conflict resolution mentor and system wide coach. + Participates as a member of the Safety, Building Project Committees, and various ad-hoc committees. Co-chairs Workforce Safety Task Force having a key role in Workforce safety and violence mitigation initiatives. + Makes the final decision on employee hiring, merit review, separation, promotion, transfer, disciplinary matters and similar actions for System Security and Public Safety personnel. This leader has responsibility for preparation of the annual department budgets and for the operation of the Security Department within established budgetary limitations. Collaborates with senior leadership team, medical leadership, and staff to develop strategic priorities and plans to implement new programs/services, manage expenses, and grow revenue and contribution margins. + Establish and maintain strong/positive relationships with all service line clinicians and providers. Provide focused attention to designated security-sensitive areas + Effective protection of hospital property and implementation of safeguards. Develop and implement loss prevention programs and systems throughout the Health System to reduce the risk of losses. + Oversees timely investigation of incidents and reported security vulnerabilities. + Establish critical competencies for department leaders and officers to include required training on specific subjects annually (Use of force, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, defensive tactics, inpatient psych shadowing program) as well as the site-specific orientation that all officers go through as part of the on-the-job training. Incorporate best practices for healthcare security operations in all entities, including recruitment of officers, training for new officers, and in-service training for all officers and supervisors, leveraging of a central operations for video review, alarm tracking, common communications 24 24-hour access to a supervisor and to an on-call manager, data analysis of trends, benchmarking, and investigations. + Coordinates with Emergency Management, IT Security (CISO), HR, and Legal for unified incident response. Supports hospital accreditation, risk audits, and patient experience initiatives. + Implements security programs in compliance with the Joint Commission, OSHA, CMS, HIPAA, and other regulatory bodies.Skills/Competencies:
- This position will work closely with other leadership positions throughout the organization and must have a strong ability to work as a team member and communicate effectively at all levels throughout the organization in order to effect the successful completion of the short and long-term objectives of Baystate Health.
Required Education:
- Bachelor's Degree
- Criminal Justice, Public Safety, Healthcare Administration or related fields
- Preferred Education

Required Experience:
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive security leadership experience, preferably in healthcare
Certification:
- Preferred
- CHPA (Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator) Preferred
- CPP (Certified Protection Professional)
Education:
- Bachelors Degree (Required)

The compensation range(s) in the table below represent the base salaries for all positions at a given grade across the health system. Typically, a new hire can expect a starting salary somewhere in the lower part of the range. Actual salaries may vary by position and will be determined based on the candidate's relevant experience. No employee will be paid below the minimum of the range. Pay ranges are listed as hourly for non-exempt employees and based on assumed full time commitment for exempt employees. Minimum- Midpoint
