NMSpaceMuseum.org Created in 1978 by the New Mexico Legislature, the Department of Cultural Affairs represents New Mexico's dedication to preserving and celebrating the cultural integrity and diversity of our state. The Department oversees a broad range of New Mexico's arts and cultural heritage agencies. These include 15 divisions representing a variety of programs and services. The New Mexico Museum of Space History in Alamogordo, New Mexico, is a regional and statewide educational resource featuring space-related exhibits and exhibitions. It serves as a local landmark and a destination for anyone interested in understanding the global scope of space exploration, New Mexico's central role in that history, and the forces that have shaped our view of the universe. Why does the job exist? The Deputy Director provides executive oversight of the division's daily operations, supervising the Finance Officer, Senior Custodian, and coordinating with Facilities staff to ensure efficient management of four buildings, 50+ acres of grounds, equipment, vehicles, visitor admittance programs, and other operational activities. This position plans and oversees facility improvements and capital projects, manages all budgetary functions from annual budget preparation to daily revenue deposits, oversees contract execution, and makes financial and personnel decisions in consultation with the Executive Director. In the Director's absence, the Deputy Director assumes leadership for all staff and operational programs, ensuring compliance with State and Federal regulations. This position integrates Finance, Facilities, Visitor Services, and Plant Operations under a single supervisory role, directly supporting the Museum's mission by maintaining operational excellence, financial accountability, safe and functional facilities, and high-quality visitor and staff experiences. How does it get done?
Key Responsibilities include:
Overseeing Museum facilities, operations, finances, and staff to ensure safe, functional, and efficient operations. Planning, coordinating, and monitoring facility maintenance, capital improvements, landscaping, and plant operations in collaboration with Facilities staff, vendors, and leadership. Prioritizing facility needs, controlling costs, and ensuring capital projects meet timelines and contract requirements. Managing the division's budget, financial operations, and grant administration to ensure fiscal accountability, compliance, and effective resource allocation. Overseeing Visitor Services and operational programs, establishing procedures, maintaining service standards, supporting staff training, and managing operations in the Executive Director's absence. Providing leadership and supervision to division staff, including hiring, training, performance evaluations, discipline, and professional development. Maintaining accurate records of personnel, property, equipment, tools, state vehicles, and administrative operations. Overseeing safety programs, including OSHA compliance, and providing guidance on contracts, purchasing, and regulatory compliance. Who are the customers? Minimum Qualification Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field of study from an accredited college or university and nine (9) years of professional level experience operating within parameters and guidelines directly related to the purpose of the position defined by the agency at the time of recruitment. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling thirteen (13) years may substitute for the required education and experience. A hiring agency will designate a portion of the required experience to include supervisory and/or specialized experience. Any required licensure, certification or registration shall be defined at the time of recruitment and will be in addition to the above requirements. Employment Requirements Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License, or the ability to obtain and maintain a valid Driver's License, as a condition of continued employment. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico, or must pass, receive, and maintain Defensive Driving Course Certification, as a condition of continued employment to drive Museum vehicles including sedan, pickup, transit van. Working Conditions Extensive computer and telephone use. Work performed in office, classroom, museum galleries, theater/planetarium, outdoor grounds, and other indoor/outdoor environments, including large congregate areas, small or crowded spaces, and high-noise settings such as theater/planetarium. Work environments may include dust, dirt, temperature extremes, and potential exposure to chemicals; must maintain awareness of personal and others' safety at all times. Frequent walking, standing; occasional lifting, pushing, pulling, bending, stooping, reaching above shoulder level, climbing stairs, and hand manipulation; able to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 lbs. from time to time.
