Newly posted Job Description Overview The Cooperative Institute for Severe and High-Impact Weather Research and Operations (CIWRO) seeks to fill a Postdoctoral Research Associate position for its collaborative research as a Cooperative Institute with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Office, specifically with the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) in Norman Oklahoma. This Postdoctoral Research Associate position will advance the Probabilistic Hazard Information system (PHI) using Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML). Job Responsibilities
  • Advance PHI research and development activities to enhance rapidly-updating probabilistic severe weather hazard forecasts using AI/ML.
  • Collaboratively design and implement tools for Warn-on-Forecast (WoFS) and ensemble model integration with PHI, data analysis, visualization, verification, explainability, and other AI-driven advancements.
  • Assist with the development, facilitation, and data analysis of user engagement/Hazardous Weather Testbed (HWT) activities involving WoFS and PHI.
  • Serve as a lead or contributing author on scientific manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications and present research findings at conferences, workshops, and symposia. Creatively and efficiently solve scientific problems, both independently and as an integral member of the research team. Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science or Meteorology
  • Knowledge of and interest in the application of AI/ML techniques to investigate atmospheric phenomena in novel ways
  • Familiarity with physical- and/or AI-based atmospheric modeling systems
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with an ability to work both independently and cooperatively with others.
