Job Description
The Shipper/Receiver at Metfab Engineering, Inc. is responsible for handling all incoming and outgoing materials, finished goods, and supplies for a metal fabrication shop. This role ensures accurate documentation, careful material handling, proper packaging of fabricated parts, and timely coordination with production, purchasing, and logistics partners. The position plays a key role in maintaining workflow and inventory accuracy. Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities Shipping Package metal fabricated components according to job specifications (using protective materials, crates, pallets, etc.). Verify finished goods meet quality and paperwork requirements before shipment. Prepare shipping labels, BOLs, packing slips, and other documentation. Coordinate pickups with carriers (UPS, FedEx, freight, local couriers). Load outgoing shipments safely using forklifts or pallet jacks. Ensure shipments are on schedule to support on-time delivery (OTD) goals. Receiving Inspect incoming materials, hardware, and purchased components for accuracy and damage. Verify received materials against packing slips, purchase orders, and system entries. Document discrepancies and communicate with purchasing or vendors. Unload trucks safely and place materials in designated locations. Material Handling & Inventory Move raw materials (steel, aluminum, sheet metal, plates, tubing) to the correct storage locations. Replenish shop floor material racks, hardware bins, and consumables. Maintain clean and organized receiving, shipping, and storage areas. Assist with cycle counts and inventory audits. Update systems for received materials, transfers, and shipments. Internal Coordination Work closely with Production, Purchasing, Engineering, and Quality to ensure accurate and timely flow of materials. Identify delays, shortages, or issues that could impact production schedules. Communicate proactively when shipments or materials impact customer deadlines. Physical and Mental Requirements 1-3 years experience in shipping/receiving, preferably in manufacturing or metal fabrication. Ability to read job travelers, packing lists, purchase orders, and fabrication labels. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Forklift experience (certification preferred). Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office, ERP/MRP systems). Ability to lift 50+ lbs and handle large or awkward metal components safely. Understanding of safe material handling, rigging, palletizing, and banding practices. Work Environment Fast-paced manufacturing shop environment. Frequent interaction with forklifts, overhead cranes, and material handling equipment. Exposure to steel, aluminum, welding, cutting, and machining operations.
