Shipping and Receiving Associate - Second Shift - $20 / HR Job Description This role supports a large metal distribution and processing facility by safely loading and unloading trucks, handling long steel beams, and ensuring accurate, organized shipment of materials on second shift. You will work closely with a tight-knit team to keep daily deliveries on schedule while operating overhead cranes, cutting equipment, and other warehouse machinery. Responsibilities Load and unload trucks safely and efficiently, ensuring materials are handled with care and accuracy. Operate overhead cranes to move steel beams up to 50 feet in length, following all safety procedures. Cut, saw, and measure raw material to specified lengths and dimensions using tape measures and cutting equipment. Operate machinery and cutters to prepare loads accurately according to customer requirements and internal standards. Organize steel products in a highly structured, "Tetris-like" manner to maximize space and maintain an orderly warehouse. Work collaboratively within a team to ensure all scheduled deliveries are prepared and completed each day. Perform general shop and warehouse duties such as cleaning, sweeping, and assisting in other departments as needed. Climb in and out of trucks, stand, walk, and squat throughout the shift to complete loading and unloading tasks. Follow safety guidelines and standard operating procedures to maintain a safe work environment for yourself and your coworkers. Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members regarding load status, material issues, and any operational concerns. Essential Skills Previous truck loading experience in a fast-paced shipping and receiving or warehouse environment. Ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds repeatedly throughout the shift. Comfort standing, walking, squatting, and climbing into and out of trucks for the duration of the shift. At least 1 year of tenure in each of your most recent positions, demonstrating reliability and commitment. Experience with shipping and receiving processes, including loading and unloading trucks. Familiarity with steel manufacturing or handling steel materials in a warehouse or industrial setting. Ability to operate or learn to operate overhead cranes safely. Strong teamwork skills and willingness to work closely with others to achieve shared goals. Basic measurement skills using tape measures to ensure accurate cuts and material preparation. Attention to detail and organizational skills to maintain orderly storage of steel products. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience in warehouse operations, including truck loading and unloading in environments such as parcel or freight carriers. Hilo or forklift experience, or the ability and willingness to learn powered industrial truck operation. Mechanical aptitude, including comfort using hand tools, tape measures, and reading basic prints or instructions. Experience working with overhead cranes or other heavy material handling equipment. Flexibility to work second shift hours from 3:00 PM to 11:30 PM, Monday through Friday, with optional weekend hours for additional time. Strong work ethic and consistent attendance, with the ability to maintain excellent attendance records. Willingness to work in a large industrial facility that may be warm during summer months. Work Environment This role is based in a 524,000-square-foot metal distribution and processing facility often described as a "grocery store for metals," providing custom-cut materials and next-day delivery to a large customer base across North America. The building was completely gutted and reorganized in October, offering an updated, efficient layout. The facility can become hot during the summer, but controlled air systems help manage the temperature. You will work on second shift from 3:00 PM to 11:30 PM, Monday through Friday, with optional Saturday hours if you want extra time. The environment is industrial and fast-paced, with overhead cranes, cutting machinery, and other equipment used to handle steel beams up to 50 feet long. Music plays throughout the shift, contributing to a lively atmosphere, and the culture emphasizes teamwork, strong communication, and operating as a cohesive unit. Appropriate industrial footwear, such as steel-toe shoes or boots, is required, supported by a footwear voucher program. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Belleville, MI. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00/hr.
