About the Operation Private fleet supporting a primary seasonal business Approximately 70% dedicated company freight and 30% third-party freight Operating primarily throughout the Southeastern United States 40 Class 8 tractors 120+ liftgate trailers 40-50 outsourced loads per week during peak season utilizing company-owned trailers Position Summary The Director of Transportation will have full responsibility for fleet operations, profitability, equipment management, maintenance, dispatch, driver performance, and operational efficiency. The ideal candidate possesses a strong trucking background, understands every line of a transportation P&L, and has a proven history of improving fleet performance through disciplined management and data-driven decision making. Key Responsibilities Financial Management Assume ownership of transportation P&L performance Develop and manage annual operating budgets Monitor revenue, maintenance, fuel, utilization, and operating costs Driver Management Lead driver recruiting, retention, coaching, and performance management Build a culture of accountability and safety Dispatch and Routing Direct dispatch operations and load planning Reduce empty miles and maximize loaded miles Maintenance and Equipment Management Oversee maintenance operations Develop replacement strategies and equipment purchasing plans Leadership Lead dispatch, maintenance, drivers, and administrative personnel Establish KPIs and accountability systems Qualifications 10+ years of trucking or transportation management experience Proven experience managing drivers, dispatch, and maintenance operations Strong understanding of transportation economics and fleet profitability Experience managing transportation P&Ls Knowledge of DOT, FMCSA, safety, and compliance requirements Bachelor's Degree What Success Looks Like Return the transportation operation to sustainable profitability Improve fleet utilization and routing efficiency Reduce maintenance costs and equipment downtime Improve driver retention and engagement Compensation Competitive base salary, performance-based bonus, profit-sharing opportunity, benefits package, and significant autonomy and decision-making authority.
