They must take necessary measures to minimize variations in punctual bus departures, assign daily work to staff, and ensure compliance with TARTA policy and Union agreements. This role also involves accounting for any irregularities that may affect scheduled services, including employee absences, and adapting to route deviations or unforeseen delays. Additionally, the Transit Dispatch Supervisor ensures the safety of passengers by inspecting coach operators prior to dispatching and taking appropriate action in case of violations. TARTA has recently embarked on a transformational journey with the passage of Issue 12 in 2021. This local sales tax levy has significantly increased the local investment into the transit authority and has also expanded its service area to all of Lucas County and the City of Rossford in Wood County. In response to the local community's renewed focus and support of TARTA, the Board adopted TARTA Next, a ten-year plan to increase services, invest in capital assets such as new mobility hubs and a zero-emissions bus fleet, and to improve customer experience through investments in technology, bus shelters and signage, and customer outreach. This transformation is well underway and powered by a dedicated team of professionals in each department from the leadership team to every front-line team member.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Dispatch buses in accordance with established schedules. Assign regular and extra work daily, adhering to TARTA policy and Union agreements. Monitor and address employee absences, sick leave, and route deviations to maintain timely services. Ensure compliance with contract provisions for coach operators and extra-board personnel. Conduct visual inspections of coach operators prior to dispatching and document any violations of established policies. Implement disciplinary actions, including suspension, with the consent of the Superintendent, Transportation. Regulate and control the movement of transit and service vehicles using a two-way radio communication system. Conduct accident investigations and perform road supervising duties as needed. Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Excellent oral and written communication skills. Proficient use of a computer and common business applications including Microsoft Office Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to lead and motivate staff. Ability to make decisions quickly and manage multiple tasks simultaneously. Professional appearance and demeanor. Punctuality and safety orientation. Positive attitude and approachable demeanor. Minimum Qualifications A combination of education and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position. Valid Class B CDL with Passenger and Airbrakes endorsements. No more than 2 points on MVR in the past 3 years. Education and Experience High school diploma required; college education preferred. At least one year of prior Public Transit experience, including at least six months of bus driving experience Special Conditions The physical demands described are representative of those that must be satisfied by the employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Working Conditions The work environment characteristics described herein are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job, including close exposure to computer monitors and video screens. The work environment is typically an office setting with exposure to computer monitors and frequent interaction with telecommunication devices. Physical efforts include sitting at a desk or table for administrative tasks, operating telecommunication devices and computer equipment, and driving and using heavy equipment during field activities. Proficient English language communication is necessary for the role. Physical Effort Required The Transportation Supervisor position requires continuous sitting (5.5 to 8 hours daily) and occasional standing (0.25 to 2.5 hours daily). Occasional walking (0.25 to 2.5 hours daily) and driving (0.25 to 2.5 hours daily) are necessary. Occasional lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs (0.25 to 2.5 hours daily) is required, with no lifting/carrying over 50 lbs. Occasional reaching above shoulder level (0.25 to 2.5 hours daily) and bending/stooping (0.25 to 2.5 hours daily) are required. Pushing/pulling is never required.
