Job Description

About the Job The Transportation Manager is responsible for leading all aspects of driver and helper team performance, including onboarding, training, coaching, mentoring, and ongoing performance management. This role plays a critical part in building and maintaining strong, positive relationships with front‑line employees and ensuring safe, efficient, and high‑quality route execution. A majority of the workday is spent in the field alongside drivers and helpers, providing real‑time support, reinforcing best practices, and ensuring adherence to operational, safety, and service standards. The manager will directly oversee 15-20 front‑line employees and be accountable for the daily performance of approximately 20 routes within a facility operating a total of 72 routes. This location is the second-largest site in the Capitol Market Area, requiring strong leadership, coordination, and execution skills to maintain operational excellence. This position requires schedule flexibility, with shifts beginning as early as 2:00 AM and as late as 4:00 AM. Standard workdays are Monday through Friday, with the potential for a half‑day Saturday once per month based on business need. What You'll be Doing Ensuring new frontline employees have tools, instruction, and feedback for successful daily duties Meet with new frontline employees daily to ensure consistent communication and support of onboarding Provide timely and consistent touchpoints with frontline employees. Regular review of best practices to enhance daily performance Focus on understanding and progress of frontline employee career goals Identify and address improvement opportunities and collaborate with frontline employees to ensure continued success Actively practice and seek feedback on coaching conversations. Lead by example to ensure safety practices are paramount with each employee and Teaching and developing an understanding of the WM Way Conducts Root Cause Investigations for all injuries and incidents, ensuring consistent discipline and retraining. Documents and maintains records required by regulatory agencies such as the Department of Transportation. Reviews and audits documentation related to route operations daily (e.g., DVIRs, driver time and attendance, open tickets), following up where appropriate. Visits customers and customer sites to evaluate and resolve safety issues, seeking service alternatives where appropriate. What does it take to be a Transportation Manager with WM? A. Required Qualifications Associate's Degree (accredited) or in lieu of a degree, High School Diploma (accredited) and two (2) years of relevant work experience. Must be at least 18 years of age Legally eligible to work in the country where the position is located Valid Driver's License B.
