Legacy Early College is a K4-12 public charter school that originated through the vision of businessman William Brown in 2009 with an unwavering focus on To and Through College at every grade level. Legacys model combines academics, nutrition, physical fitness, and mental health. In addition to our college-driven academic standards, meals are made on site, scholars participate in PE every day, and Social-Emotional Literacy is integrated into the culture and curriculum.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Transportation Manager will work under direction of the COO and be responsible for supervising and coordinating all aspects of Legacy Early Colleges student transportation bus operations. Oversees the establishment and revision of bus routes; prompt resolution of student transportation problems; coordination of student transportation programs with principals, central office, parents, South Carolina Public Charter District, outside agencies, and others; preparation of current and long-range student transportation plans. Oversees transportation staff including transportation mechanics, assistant transportation supervisor, bus drivers, and bus aides.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties Plan, organize, and coordinate activities of bus drivers responsible for ensuring efficient and safe operations of student transportation, including proper coverage of all bus routes. Supervise, evaluate, train, and delegate work to appropriate staff; manage employee performance including documentation of behavioral concerns, corrective action, and recommendations for hiring, discipline, and termination in coordination with Human Resources. Own the payroll function for department employees including time sheets, extra duty assignments, overtime, and other related activities. Receive, record, and respond to inquiries from multiple stakeholders concerning school bus operations and safety issues. Monitor routes and schedules to ensure safety and efficiency and ensure all affected parties are informed of any changes. Organize, coordinate, and direct appropriate in-service training programs via Vector for department employees, with special emphasis on bus drivers and transportation assistants. Develop and coordinate programs for educating scholars in appropriate safe conduct procedures while at bus stops and while being transported. Ensure compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal transportation regulations, including SC DHEC vehicle inspection requirements, SCDOE pupil transportation regulations, and SCPCD reporting obligations. Lead emergency and crisis response for transportation incidents including bus breakdowns, accidents, and student safety events; coordinate with law enforcement, administration, and parents as needed. Provide timely and clear communication to parents and school administration during transportation incidents or route disruptions. Manage fleet operations including preventive maintenance schedules, vehicle inspections, repair coordination, and assessment of vehicles and equipment for repair or replacement. Prepare specifications for the purchase of new vehicles and other department equipment to ensure safe and efficient transportation operations. Advise the COO in the evaluation of bids for repairs, parts, supplies, and miscellaneous chemicals. Own the preparation of the annual transportation operating and capital budgets; monitor expenditures throughout the year and report variances to the COO. Prepare and submit required federal, state, and district reports on time. Attend Safe Driver meetings and assist with crash investigations. Attend training sessions, conferences, and workshops to stay current on transportation best practices and safety standards. Skills & Qualifications Bachelors degree, preferred Must hold an active
SC CDL B
License with School Bus endorsements Minimum of three (3) years of supervisory experience in school or public transportation Demonstrated experience managing fleet operations, including preventive maintenance programs and vehicle lifecycle management Experience owning or managing a departmental budget Proficiency with transportation routing software; Traversa experience strongly preferred Familiarity with student information systems and transportation technology platforms Knowledge of SC DHEC vehicle inspection requirements, SCDOE pupil transportation regulations, and SCPCD reporting obligations, preferred General geographic knowledge of Greenville County, preferred Spanish speaking ability, preferred Superb written and oral communication skills Exceptional attention to detail and follow-through Work Schedule This position will operate on the Legacy Early College academic calendar (240-day) schedule. Extended hours may be required during the start and end of the school year, during testing periods, or in response to operational needs. This position will have periods of extended work week hours, which is required to support both the ongoing development of the organization and the delivery of high-quality education for all students.
