Job Description
Supports the daily operations of the Police Department by performing clerical work including, but not limited to, record keeping, planning, overseeing and providing management for Fleet Services and fueling operations. Services include fleet management systems and coordination, and monitors quality control to ensure effective departmental performance. Performs semi-skilled, skilled, technical, and administrative work in maintaining the vehicles and mechanical equipment of the city
SUPERVISION
General supervision is provided by the Police Captain. Work is reviewed occasionally to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and conformance to established standards; work is subject to general and departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines. Oversees and manages the daily operations of Police Department Fleet services, ensuring efficient and effective service delivery across all fleet management activities. Test, service, and repair light and heavy vehicles and equipment. Inspect, adjust, and/or replace necessary components and related parts in the performance of repair and maintenance work. Adhere to assigned work schedule as outlined in the Department and City policies and procedures; ensure all behaviors comply with the City's Personnel Rules and Regulations. Recommend, manage and develop strategy for maintaining and repairing the City's vehicles and equipment. Ensures productivity, quality, and operational safety by conducting fieldwork and coordinating with police department staff. Establishes work priorities, sets goals and objectives, and schedules tasks to ensure alignment with departmental standards and goals. Assists department with cost estimates for vehicle and equipment replacements. Ensures that all newly received vehicles meet specified requirements and oversees the installation of fuel monitoring equipment, GPS modules, and vehicle markings to align with City standards. Conducts inspections and assists with determining condition classifications to assess whether end-of-service-life replacement is warranted. Assists the Purchasing Department with the coordination and execution of fleet vehicle auctions. Manages the preparation process for vehicles and equipment disposal, ensuring all assets are prepared for City auctions in accordance with disposal policies and standards. Performs other duties as required or assigned to support departmental needs and organizational objectives. Knowledge of principles, materials and tools associated with the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment, and the ability to use same in a safe manner. Knowledge of principles and practices of fleet management, including fleet maintenance, and vehicle replacement. Knowledge of vehicle and equipment procurement processes, including specification adherence and vendor coordination. Knowledge of sustainable fleet practices, including emerging vehicle technologies and fleet management software. Knowledge of City and State safety regulations related to fleet operations, fueling systems, and vehicle disposal. Skill to diagnose equipment defects and ability to use hand tools and power equipment to make repairs or alterations. Skill in planning and prioritizing work assignments to meet department objectives efficiently. Skill in coordinating with vendors, purchasing departments, and finance teams to ensure efficient and cost-effective fleet operations. Ability to inspect vehicles and equipment to determine condition and assess end-of-service-life for replacement.
MINIMUM EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Three (3) years of experience with fleet management, automotive mechanics, or equipment servicing. High school diploma or G.E.D. required. Basic computer skills required. Possession of ASE A1 Engine repair certification and ASE A6 Electrical Systems certification are preferred. Ability to conduct fieldwork, including inspecting vehicles and equipment under varying environmental conditions. Employee will work with chemicals, mechanical, electrical and traffic hazards. Employee will be exposed to poor lighting, dirt, dust, noises, fumes, odors, water, and mud. Capacity to stand, walk, bend, and perform hands-on inspection and maintenance-related tasks for extended periods. Ability to lift, carry, and handle equipment, tools, and materials, sometimes weighing 50 pounds and occasionally material weighing up to 100 pounds. Comfortable working both in an office setting for administrative tasks and outdoors. Employee will work in extreme temperatures, standing, walking, bending, kneeling, twisting, climbing, and lifting in order to maintain or repair the City's fleet. Ability to operate a city or personal vehicle for business purposes, including travel to various City locations and work sites.
