06/19/2026 POSITION SUMMARY Transportation Supervisors serve as the first level of management within the Transportation Department and act on behalf of the Operations Manager and Director as assigned. Supervisors are responsible for overseeing daily transportation operations to ensure the safe, efficient, and reliable transportation of students. The position provides supervision, leadership, guidance, support, and performance evaluation of transportation staff; promotes professionalism and accountability; and serves as a liaison between drivers, schools, parents, and the community. Transportation Supervisors work collaboratively with stakeholders to resolve concerns, provide excellent customer service, assign route coverage to maintain uninterrupted service, and personally operate a school bus when necessary to support departmental operations. Supervisors also assist with inclement weather planning, road condition assessments, and transportation safety evaluations to support operational decisions and ensure student and staff safety. The position requires knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local transportation regulations, including Virginia Department of Education requirements, and the ability to develop and adjust bus routes and schedules to meet student transportation needs safely and efficiently.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Provide supervision, support, coaching, and performance evaluation of transportation personnel. Promote safe, efficient, and professional transportation services. Develop, review, and modify bus routes and schedules. Assign route coverage and coordinate staffing to ensure continuity of service. Operate a school bus as needed to support transportation operations. Monitor road and weather conditions and assist with operational decisions during inclement weather or emergencies. Ensure compliance with federal, state, local, and VDOE transportation regulations. Serve as a liaison between leadership, drivers, schools, parents, and the community. Address transportation concerns and provide timely, respectful, and responsive customer service. Assist with employee training and professional development. Perform other duties as assigned by the Operations Manager or Director.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or GED diploma required. Bachelor's degree preferred. College coursework in transportation, management, or other related fields, preferred. Extensive progressively responsible experience preferred, including but not limited to human resource management experience and experience in the scheduling, routing, and safe operation of a fleet of school buses or similar fleet transportation systems. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience, which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position, may be considered. Valid driver's license required Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Class B Commercial Driver's License (w/air brake, passenger, and school bus endorsements) within 1 month of employment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of the scheduling, routing, and safe operations of school buses or other fleet vehicles. Knowledge of the state-mandated safety requirements and procedures. Ability to plan and maintain effective student transportation programs. Ability to analyze student transportation problems and programs and to recommend or implement corrective actions designed to improve student transportation operations. Ability to deal courteously and effectively with school officials, parents, VDOE officials, executive staff, city leaders, community groups, and others. Ability to supervise, directly or indirectly, employees, including several layers of employees. Excellent oral and written communications and human relations skills. Demonstrated ability to supervise and evaluate staff Ability to prepare and oversee the preparation of complex reports and analyses.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
Transportation Supervisors provide direct supervision, support, coaching, and performance evaluation of assigned transportation personnel. The position is responsible for monitoring employee performance, promoting professionalism and accountability, assisting with employee development, and ensuring staff adhere to applicable policies, procedures, and safety standards.
