$72,852-$92,980 Keep Adams County Moving Adams County Public Works seeks a knowledgeable, service-oriented Fleet Manager to lead the maintenance, repair, acquisition, replacement, and lifecycle management of County vehicles and equipment. This hands-on leadership role ensures the vehicles and equipment used by road crews and County departments are safe, reliable, available, and cost-effective—from pickups and plow trucks to heavy construction equipment, trailers, and specialized assets. The Fleet Manager leads shop operations, supervises staff, sets maintenance priorities, manages vendors and contracts, monitors costs and performance, and plans for long-term fleet needs. What You'll Do

• Plan and oversee inspection, maintenance, repair, acquisition, replacement, assignment, utilization, and disposal of County vehicles, heavy equipment, and related assets.
• Develop and improve preventive-maintenance programs; set work priorities and shop schedules to support road maintenance, seasonal operations, emergency response, and County service needs.
• Evaluate equipment condition, repair history, utilization, downtime, and lifecycle costs; make repair-versus-replacement recommendations.
• Maintain fleet records and use fleet-management data to monitor availability, maintenance costs, fuel use, replacement needs, and total cost of ownership.
• Supervise, coach, evaluate, and develop fleet-maintenance staff; support hiring, onboarding, scheduling, and workforce planning.
• Coordinate with Public Works supervisors and County departments regarding fleet priorities, downtime, and equipment availability.
• Prepare and manage Fleet Division operating and capital budgets, multi-year replacement plans, and capital requests.
• Lead or support specifications, purchasing, bid evaluation, and acceptance of vehicles, equipment, parts, tools, and services in accordance with County requirements.
• Manage vendors, warranties, outside repair services, contracts, and shop inventory.
• Ensure compliance with applicable laws, safety standards, and County policies; promote safe shop and field practices.
• Maintain readiness for winter operations, emergencies, and other time-sensitive Public Works activities.
• Prepare reports and recommendations for the Public Works Director, County leadership, and other stakeholders.

Successful candidates will demonstrate:

• Knowledge of diesel and gasoline vehicles, heavy equipment, hydraulics, electrical systems, diagnostics, preventive maintenance, and repair practices.
• Ability to set priorities, make sound decisions under pressure, and keep essential equipment operational.
• Supervisory or lead experience in maintenance, repair, equipment, transportation, or public works.
• Skill in budget management, cost analysis, lifecycle planning, procurement, vendor management, and contract oversight.
• Working knowledge of fleet-management systems, maintenance software, spreadsheets, and reporting tools.
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with a commitment to safety, stewardship, and continuous improvement. Minimum Qualifications
• High school diploma or GED.
• Five years of progressively responsible experience in fleet maintenance, fleet operations, equipment maintenance, heavy-duty vehicle repair, public works equipment management, or a related field.
• Two years of lead, supervisory, or management experience, or demonstrated experience directing the work of others.
• Valid Washington State driver license and an acceptable driving record. An equivalent combination of education, training, certifications, and experience demonstrating the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered. Preferred Qualifications
• Experience managing a public-sector, municipal, county, utility, construction, agricultural, or similarly complex fleet.
• Experience with medium- and heavy-duty trucks, snow-and-ice equipment, off-road construction equipment, trailers, and specialized public-works assets.
• Commercial Driver License—preferably Class A or B with air-brake qualification—or ability to obtain the required license within six or twelve months of hire.
• ASE, CPFP, CAFM, CEM, or related professional fleet certifications.
• Associate degree, technical certificate, or advanced training in diesel or automotive technology, fleet or equipment management, business administration, or a related field.
• Experience with fleet-management software, fuel-management systems, public procurement, and operating and capital budgets.

Working Conditions This position works in office, field, and shop settings and may involve exposure to moving vehicles, heavy equipment, machinery, noise, fuels, lubricants, cleaning agents, and other shop hazards. Occasional travel between County facilities and work sites is required. The Fleet Manager may be required to respond outside normal work hours for emergencies, severe weather, winter operations, equipment failures, or other operational needs.

This is a full-time, benefited position which is classified at Mid-Management EE-6 of the 2026 Exempt Salary schedule of $72,852 - $92,980
