The overall function of this position is to supervise staff of employees responsible for the safe operation of movable bridges in the parishes of Terrebonne and Lafourche. Four years of experience in the construction, maintenance, or repair of roads, bridges, levees, drainage facilities, wharfs, buildings, or grounds; OR Four years of experience in the operation or maintenance of electronically controlled locks or industrial or heavy mobile equipment.

JOB DUTIES
Supervises the initial training of new bridge operators. This involves all of the various moveable bridge types. Proper training is extremely important since improper operation of a moveable bridge can easily result in injury to the public, protracted downtime, tremendous costs not only in terms of repairs and loss of the facility to vehicular and marine traffic but also in terms of litigation and judgements against the State. Supervises the scheduling of operators and otherwise determines work assignments. It is the supervisor responsibility of the Foreman to replace any operator failing to report for duty by scheduling another operator in order to provide unbroken service to the public. Also supervises scheduling of operators for "ON CALL" bridges and for after-hours openings of those bridges without 24-hour coverage. Supervises ongoing training of all bridge operators. Supervises the on-going monitoring of the current condition of all moveable bridges in his or her charge and alerts the mechanical or electrical crew at the onset of minor problems before they become debilitating major ones and exercises judgement and takes whatever actions are necessary in order to keep the moveable bridges satisfactorily safe and operation. Communicates within the Department, with the Sub-District Assistant District Administrator of Operations, Bridge Engineer 6 and other responsible authorities regarding the condition and operation of all bridges. Communicates with agencies or organizations outside of Department including Law Enforcement agencies, Fire Department, Coast Guard, Corps of Engineers, the media, etc. regarding bridge conditions. Reviews and approves bridge operators' work, approves leave, evaluates performance of assigned employees. Recommends reallocations and permanent status, answers grievances filed by bridge operators, arbitrates/handles conflicts or disputes between operators, etc. Covers bridge operations during shortages of personnel, etc.
