About the Role The Line Maintenance Crew Leader performs advanced skilled work leading and participating in the installation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of water and sewer lines, taps, meters, and related infrastructure. This position serves as the lead worker for a small utility maintenance crew, coordinating daily work activities, ensuring compliance with safety and operational standards, and assisting with the maintenance of the Town's water and sewer systems. Employees work under general supervision and are evaluated through project inspections, observations, and review of completed work for quality, safety, and adherence to departmental standards. The work requires both indoor and outdoor activity in varying weather conditions and may include on-call and call-back assignments.
  • Lead and participate in the installation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of water and sewer lines, taps, and related facilities
  • Supervise and assist with the installation of water and sewer service connections and taps
  • Assemble, install, repair, replace, and maintain water meters and related equipment
  • Coordinate daily work assignments and provide direction to crew members in the field
  • Load, transport, and prepare equipment, materials, and tools for assigned projects
  • Inspect work in progress to ensure compliance with instructions, specifications, and safety requirements
  • Operate construction equipment including backhoes, loaders, trenchers, boring equipment, sewer rodders, tapping machines, and related machinery
  • Oversee the maintenance and proper operation of crew vehicles, equipment, and tools
  • Investigate service requests, complaints, and utility system issues and recommend corrective actions
  • Communicate department policies, procedures, and project information to residents and customers as needed
  • Perform complex utility maintenance and construction tasks requiring advanced technical skill
  • Restore disturbed landscaping following construction activities, including grading, seeding, and planting shrubbery
  • Complete work orders, project documentation, and related records
  • Assist with employee training, coaching, and annual performance evaluations
  • Perform other related tasks as required
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Five to seven years of experience in utility construction, maintenance, or related public works activities
  • Experience operating heavy construction equipment, including backhoes, loaders, trenchers, boring equipment, and similar machinery
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered Special Requirements
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina Commercial Driver's License (Class B) with Tanker Endorsement or ability to obtain within 18 months of hire
  • North Carolina Water Distribution Grade C Certification and Sewer Collection Grade II Certification, or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire
  • Certification requirements may be waived for candidates with more than ten years of directly related water and sewer utility construction experience
