Overview:
The Traffic Control Crew Leader is responsible for leading and coordinating field crews to safely install, maintain, modify, and remove temporary traffic control devices for roadway construction and maintenance projects. This role ensures lane closures and work zones are established in accordance with the Virginia Work Area Protection Manual (VAWAPM) and project-specific traffic control plans while maintaining the highest standards of safety and efficiency.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead and direct traffic control crew members during primarily nightly field operations. Coordinate the setup, maintenance, and removal of lane closures and temporary traffic control devices. Maintain open and consistent communication with the Project Manager regarding daily work activities, crew assignments, lane closure operations and timeliness, safety compliance, customer or contractor requests, material and equipment needs, and any unexpected conditions or changes affecting project delivery. Ensure all work complies with VAWAPM requirements and approved traffic control plans. Communicate effectively with supervisors, contractors, and project personnel to execute work assignments. Adapt quickly to schedule changes, emergency requests, and revised project requirements. Monitor work zone safety and address potential hazards promptly. Maintain accurate timing to meet project schedules and minimize traffic disruptions. Train and mentor crew members on safe work practices and proper traffic control procedures. Operate company vehicles and equipment as needed. Perform overnight work and respond to short-notice assignments within the Staunton/Augusta area.

Clean driving record - this will be verified and employment is contingent upon verification.

Ability to work overnight shifts locally throughout the Staunton/Augusta area.

Intermediate Work Zone Certification preferred, or willingness to obtain certification.

Preferred:
Previous leadership or crew lead experience in traffic control, roadway construction, or related field.
Preferred:
Experience with lane closures, work zone setup, and temporary traffic control operations.

Knowledge of the Virginia Work Area Protection Manual (VAWAPM).
